Chapter 6 - The Clean Slate

Three weeks after the raid on the estate, the city’s criminal landscape had been completely rewritten.

With Victor Rowan and Julian Vance in federal custody, turning state’s evidence against the Moretti family to avoid life sentences in supermax facilities, the Moretti syndicate collapsed within days. Federal agents executed forty arrest warrants across the state, dismantling the rival syndicate permanently.

The Marlowe organization was at a crossroads.

I sat in my second-floor office. The broken front doors had been replaced with beautiful, handcrafted oak. The rose garden outside was blooming under the warm spring sun.

Across the desk sat Marcus, my new second-in-command.

“The shipping ledgers are clean, boss,” Marcus reported, placing a thin binder on my desk. “We’ve completed the transfer of all dock operations to legitimate commercial freight unions. The firearms distribution network has been dismantled entirely.”

I looked at the documents. For twenty years, my family had lived in the shadows, fighting wars over territory, blood, and fear.

“And the foundation?” I asked.

“The Marlowe-Sterling Children’s Hospital Trust was officially registered this morning,” Marcus smiled warmly. “Fifty million dollars in converted corporate assets have been placed into its permanent endowment fund.”

I closed the binder and stood up, looking out the window.

On the manicured green lawn below, Sophia was sitting on a checkered picnic blanket beside Leo—her brother, now fully recovered, laughing as he tossed a small leather ball across the grass.

Beside them, little Emma was sitting on a wooden easel, painting a bright yellow sun on a fresh sheet of paper while her mother, Clara, poured fresh lemonade into glass cups.

I picked up a small velvet box from my desk drawer.

Inside sat the square diamond ring—cleaned, polished, and shining like an unbroken promise.

I walked out of my office, down the grand staircase, and out onto the sunlit lawn.
