Chapter 7 - The Gathering at the Oak

As I walked across the grass, the sound of laughter drifted through the warm afternoon breeze.
Emma saw me first. She dropped her paintbrush, her pink dress fluttering as she ran across the lawn on her tiny feet, stopping right in front of me with a wide, toothy grin.
“Mr. Adrian!” she chirped, holding up a piece of paper. “Look!”
I kneeled on the soft grass, looking at her drawing.
It was a picture of a grand house with a big red roof. Standing in front were five figures holding hands: a tall man in a dark suit, a beautiful woman in a pink dress, a little girl, her mother, and a young man with a ball.
Above the tall man’s head, she had drawn a tiny gold crown.
“Is that me?” I asked softly, pointing at the figure in the suit.
“Yes,” Emma nodded proudly. “You’re the king who kept the monsters away.”
I felt a lump form in my throat—a warmth in my chest that no amount of wealth or power had ever given me.
I gently touched her small cheek. “I couldn't have done it without my best detective, Emma.”
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a tiny silver badge—a custom-made miniature detective star engraved with her name: AGENT EMMA HALE.
Emma’s eyes widened with pure joy. She took the badge, clutching it against her chest as if it were made of solid gold, and ran back to her mother, showing it off with loud squeals of delight.
Clara looked up at me, offering a quiet, deeply respectful nod of gratitude.
Sophia stood up from the picnic blanket, wiping her hands on her dress, walking slowly toward me under the shade of the ancient oak tree.
Her brother Leo followed behind her, extending his hand with genuine respect.
“Mr. Marlowe,” Leo said, his voice sincere. “I never got the chance to thank you properly. You saved my life.”

“You are family now, Leo,” I said, shaking his hand firmly. “And family doesn't need to say thank you.”
Leo smiled, nodded, and walked back toward Clara and Emma, leaving Sophia and me alone beneath the leafy canopy of the oak tree.
