Chapter 10 - The Battlefield Won

The wedding day arrived under a cloudless blue sky.
The ceremony was held not in a cold cathedral or a grand political hall, but right in the center of the courtyard rose garden where Julian had once shielded Claire and Emma with his life.
There were no senators or corrupt judges in the pews. Sitting on the wooden chairs were the estate staff, the dockworkers, the security guards who had risked their lives, Sal Carmine wearing an ill-fitting gray suit, and Marcus looking unusually sharp without his shoulder holster.
The jazz quartet played a soft, beautiful melody—the same song they had been forced to stop six months ago, but now filled with joy and light.
Julian stood beneath a floral arch of white roses, wearing a tailored black tuxedo. His heart beat faster than it ever had during any gunfight or mob war as the music shifted.
The doors opened.
Claire walked down the white aisle. She wore a stunning lace gown that trailed softly over the green grass, her dark hair styled in loose waves topped with a simple silver tiara. She looked like a queen—not because of money, but because of the grace and fierce love that radiated from her face.
Walking right beside her, holding her hand with supreme pride, was Emma. She wore a matching white flower-girl dress with a tiny red knit ribbon sewn into the hem—a tribute to the hat she had worn on the night everything changed.
When they reached the arch, Emma let go of her mother’s hand and took Julian’s hand, looking up at him with big, serious eyes.
“You have to promise to keep making the good tea,” Emma whispered loudly enough for the entire audience to hear.
A wave of warm laughter swept through the guests.
Julian dropped to one knee, looking the four-year-old in the eye. “I promise to make the tea, protect your mother, and listen to Barnaby forever.”
“Okay,” Emma nodded, satisfied. “You can marry my mommy now.”
Julian stood up, taking Claire’s hands into his own. The officiant spoke his words, but for Julian and Claire, the world narrowed down to just the two of them standing in the warm sunlight.
“Do you, Julian Mercer, take Claire Dawson to be your wedded wife?”
“I do,” Julian said, his voice firm, deep, and unwavering.
“And do you, Claire Dawson, take Julian Mercer to be your wedded husband?”
“I do,” Claire whispered, her voice filled with tears of pure joy.
“I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Julian pulled Claire into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips against hers. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, Sal Carmine shouting loudly from the front row, Marcus clapping with a wide grin.
When they pulled apart, Julian lifted Emma up onto his hip, holding Claire close against his side with his other arm.

They turned to face their friends, their family, and the home they had bled to protect.
The mansion that had once been a cold fortress of fear and criminal shadows had finally become what it was always meant to be—a sanctuary of love, a place where a maid’s little girl had faced down a boss, and a battlefield that had ended in an everlasting victory of the heart.
