Chapter 6 - The War Room

The basement safe room beneath the Mercer estate looked like an intelligence command center.

Monitors covered the concrete walls, displaying live feeds from every dock, warehouse, and street corner under Mercer control. Maps of the city were pinned to corkboards, marked with red pins showing Moretti safe houses and blue pins showing Mercer positions.

Sal Carmine sat at the center table, a radio headset clamped over his ears, shouting orders to crews stationed at the riverfront. Marcus was busy cleaning a long tactical rifle on a workbench near the door.

Claire sat in a leather armchair in the corner, holding a cup of hot broth while Emma slept soundly on a cot wrapped in a heavy wool blanket.

Julian stood over the central map, surrounded by three senior captains.

“The assassin came from a local cell hired through a broker in New Jersey,” Marcus reported, laying a encrypted cell phone on the table. “We traced his burner phone to a luxury penthouse in the financial district. Frank Moretti himself is in town.”

Sal looked up, his face dark. “Frank Moretti? The younger brother? That means Chicago sent their primary enforcer. He’s not here to negotiate, Julian. He’s here to wipe us out.”

“He brought twelve men,” Julian said, analyzing the phone logs on the screen. “They’re staying at the Grand Park Hotel under a shell company name. They think we’re on the defensive, hiding behind our perimeter walls.”

“What’s the move, boss?” Sal asked, his old eyes gleaming with a dangerous light. “We bring the full crew and lay siege to the hotel?”

“No,” Julian said coldly. “A shootout at a downtown hotel brings the National Guard. That’s what Moretti wants—he wants the federal authorities to seize our assets under martial emergency laws.”

Julian tapped his finger on a specific point on the map—an abandoned rail yard three miles outside the city limits.

“We draw him out,” Julian said.

Claire looked up from her chair, her heart clenching. “How?”

Julian turned to look at her. His expression softened for a brief moment before returning to iron. “We let them think their attack in the garden worked. We leak a report that you and Emma were injured and are being moved to the private medical clinic near the rail yard.”

“Julian, no!” Claire stood up, dropping her cup onto the saucer with a loud clatter. “You can’t use us as bait! If they—”

“You won't be anywhere near the clinic, Claire,” Julian stepped away from the table, walking over to her. He reached out and took both of her hands in his, holding them firmly. “You and Emma will be inside a steel bunker thirty feet beneath this house, guarded by Marcus and six of my best men. The clinic will be empty—except for forty of our men waiting inside the shipping containers.”

Claire looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation. “What about you?”

“I will be at the clinic,” Julian said quietly. “Frank Moretti wants my head. I have to be there to offer it to him.”

“Julian, please,” Claire’s voice cracked, tears rising in her eyes. “Don't do this. We can just leave. We can take a train, change our names—”

“Claire,” Julian interrupted gently, raising one hand to stroke her soft cheek, his thumb brushing over the spot where Vanessa had struck her days ago. “I spent my whole life building an empire of fear because I thought it was the only way to survive. But these last few days… watching you protect Emma, watching Emma stand up for you… you showed me what a real life looks like.”

He leaned down, pressing his forehead lightly against hers.

“I’m not fighting for docks anymore, Claire,” he whispered. “I’m fighting so that when I walk into a room with you, I don't have to bring a gun. I’m clearing the path so we can live.”

Claire closed her eyes, a tear escaping down her cheek. She didn't pull away. She leaned into his touch, her hand resting over his heart, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm beating inside his chest.

“You come back to us,” she demanded, her voice fierce with a newfound strength. “Do you hear me, Julian Mercer? You come back.”

“On my life,” Julian promised.
