Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

By dawn, the news had shattered the city’s political landscape forever.

Senator Whitmore had been officially indicted on seventeen counts of racketeering, bribery, and treasonous corruption. His daughter, Vanessa, had been arrested at her penthouse for her involvement in laundering funds through her private charity foundations. The Moretti family’s reach into the region was completely severed, their leaders behind bars or fleeing the country.

The Mercer syndicate had emerged not just victorious, but legitimate.

At eight o’clock in the morning, the heavy steel door of the underground safe room at the Mercer estate unlocked with a heavy hydraulic hiss.

Claire stood near the door, her hands wrapped tightly in her sweater sleeves, her eyes fixed on the entrance.

Julian walked in.

He was exhausted. His clothes smelled of rain and exhaust, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his left sleeve was torn from the night’s events. But he was walking on his own feet, and his face was calm.

Claire didn't wait. She ran across the concrete room and threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

Julian caught her, lifting her slightly off the ground, holding her against his body with a desperate tightness. He closed his eyes, inhaling the sweet scent of lavender and soap that belonged only to her.

“It’s over, Claire,” he whispered into her ear, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s all over.”

Claire pulled back, her hands framing his face, checking every inch of him for injuries. “Are you hurt? Tell me the truth.”

“I’m fine,” Julian smiled gently, resting his hands on her waist. “The Whitmores are gone. Chicago is gone. There is no one left to threaten this house.”

A sleepy cough came from the cot in the corner.

Emma sat up, rubbing her big brown eyes, Barnaby hanging limply from her hand. She looked at Julian, then at her mother hugging him.

“Is the big man staying for breakfast?” Emma asked innocently.

Julian laughed—a deep, booming sound that filled the concrete bunker with warmth. He walked over to the cot, crouched down, and lifted Emma onto his shoulder with one arm.

“I’m staying for every breakfast, Emma,” Julian said softly, looking over at Claire. “If your mother will have me.”

Claire looked at the two of them—the powerful man who ruled an empire, and the tiny girl who had faced down a dining hall full of monsters with a stuffed elephant.

“We’ll have you,” Claire said, tears of pure happiness overflowing her eyes. “Always.”
