Chapter 8 - The Shadow Cleared

By dawn, the estate was entirely secured.

Marcus Cole and his surviving mercenaries had been captured by federal authorities after Marco leaked their location and financial links to illegal international arms trafficking.

The North Side syndicate was completely dismantled. The corrupt members of my own security council were stripped of their titles, their assets seized, and their names wiped from the family records forever.

Three weeks later, spring began to show its first gentle signs across the estate.

The heavy snow melted away, revealing bright green grass and fresh spring blossoms along the courtyard gardens.

I stood on the glass terrace of my private office, watching the afternoon sun warm the stone.

Down in the courtyard, Bruno was trotting happily along the grass—his hip fully healed, his black coat glossy and healthy in the sunlight.

Beside him walked four-year-old Emma, wearing a bright yellow sundress, holding a small wooden ball that she threw across the lawn for the dog to retrieve.

A soft knock sounded at my door.

Sophia stepped into the room carrying two cups of fresh espresso. She was wearing a simple, elegant ivory dress that highlighted her graceful figure and warm, radiant smile.

“You’re watching them again,” Sophia said gently, setting a cup on my desk.

“I’m watching my home,” I replied, stepping up to her.

I reached out, taking her soft hand in mine. Over the last two months, our quiet bond had deepened into something profound, unshakeable, and absolute.

“Alessandro,” Sophia murmured, looking into my eyes. “The estate feels so different now. The men aren't walking around with their hands on their holsters anymore.”

“Because the shadows are gone,” I said softly.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes widened as she looked at the box, then back up at me.
