Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Estate

The heavy thunder of automatic rifle fire echoed across the snow-covered lawn outside.

"How many?" Vincent demanded sharply, his eyes hard as flint, grabbing a tactical vest from his office safe and strapping it across his chest.

"At least thirty men, Boss!" Marco reported, reloading his weapon with one hand. "They brought heavy firepower! They cut the main power lines—we’re running on backup generators!"

Vincent turned to me. He grabbed my shoulders, pulling me close, looking directly into my eyes.

"Listen to me, Clara," Vincent said urgently. "Behind the bookshelf in my office is an iron door. It leads to an underground emergency bunker built into the bedrock beneath the estate. It has its own air supply, independent power, and a direct communications line to the state police."

"Vincent, no," I gasped, clutching his vest. "Come with us!"

"I have to hold the main stairs, Clara," Vincent said fiercely. "If Vale’s men break through the second floor, they will search every room. I need to eliminate them in the grand foyer before they ever get near you."

He cupped my face in his hands, leaning down and pressing a hard, passionate kiss against my lips—a kiss filled with raw promise, fire, and unyielding protection.

"Get the children into the bunker," Vincent commanded into my mouth. "Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice."

"Bring yourself back to me, Vincent Moretti," I sobbed, clutching his hand. "Do you hear me? Bring yourself back!"

"On my life, Clara," he swore.

He turned to Marco. "Get them into the bunker! Now!"

I ran into the nursery, scooping baby Enzo into one arm and grabbing Lily’s hand with the other. My daughter was wide awake, her eyes huge with fear, but she didn't cry. She clutched her rabbit hair clip tightly in her tiny fist.

"Mommy's here, sweetie," I whispered, rushing through Vincent’s office.

Marco pulled back the heavy oak bookshelf, revealing a heavy steel vault door. He punched a six-digit code into the digital keypad. The door hissed open, revealing a lit, concrete staircase leading down into the earth.

"Get inside, Mrs. Carter!" Marco shouted as gunshots began to shatter the glass on the floor below. "I’ll lock it from the outside!"

I carried both children down the cold stairs. The heavy steel door swung shut behind us with a deep, echoing THUD, followed by the distinct sound of heavy mechanical bolts sliding into place.

We were safe. Deep underground.

I sat on a plush cot in the center of the reinforced bunker, holding both children tightly against my chest.

From somewhere high above us, through layers of concrete and stone, the muffled, terrifying thunder of a full-scale war echoed through the darkness.
