Chapter 8 - The Threshold

Down in the subterranean bunker, the heavy digital keypad on the steel door suddenly hummed to life.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

I stood up instantly, grabbing a heavy steel emergency flashlight off the wall, holding it like a club, positioning my body squarely between the door and the cot where Lily and Enzo were sitting.

The heavy mechanical bolts clicked back. The steel door swung open.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the light of the office above, was Vincent.

His shirt was torn, his vest covered in smoke and blood, a fresh cut bleeding near his temple. But he was standing. He was alive.

I dropped the heavy flashlight. It clattered against the concrete floor.

"Vincent!" I sobbed.

I threw myself across the room, launching my body into his arms.

Vincent caught me effortlessly, lifting me off my feet, wrapping his strong arms tightly around my waist, burying his face in the crook of my neck, inhaling the sweet, clean scent of my hair.

"I told you I would come back to you, Clara," Vincent rasped into my skin, his deep voice trembling with overwhelming emotion. "I promised you."

I pulled back slightly, cupping his face in my hands, kissing his cheeks, his forehead, and finally pressing my mouth against his in a deep, desperate, breathtaking kiss that tasted of salt, iron, and pure, miraculous relief.

"Are you hurt?" I cried, searching his face.

"None of this blood is mine, my love," Vincent reassured me gently, setting me back on my feet.

He walked past me toward the cot.

Lily looked up at him, holding Enzo’s tiny hand. "Mr. Vincent? Did you fight the bad men?"

Vincent dropped down onto both knees on the cold concrete floor. He looked at my three-year-old daughter, then at his baby son, and finally up at me.

"The bad men are gone, Lily," Vincent said softly, his hazel eyes shining with tears he didn't bother to hide. "They are never, ever coming back."

He reached out, pulling both children into his massive chest, hugging them with a tender, fierce devotion that shattered every remaining wall around my heart.

I knelt beside them on the floor, wrapping my arms around Vincent’s back, resting my head against his shoulder.

In that dim, concrete underground bunker, amidst the ruins of a war, our family was born.
