Chapter 2 - The Silent Interrogation

Breakfast at the Moretti estate was usually a quiet affair. The grand dining room boasted fifty-foot ceilings, stained-glass windows, and a long oak table that could seat thirty people.
Victoria sat at the right hand of the table, wearing a ivory cashmere sweater, delicately spreading marmalade onto a slice of toasted brioche. Her posture was flawless, her calm demeanor radiant. To anyone else, she was the picture of elegance—the beautiful fiancée of the city's most powerful man.
Allesandro sat at the head, reading the morning financial times. Across the room, Elena quietly refilled his coffee cup, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen. She had spent the entire night terrified, knowing only that security had locked down her quarters without explanation.
"You look tired, darling," Victoria said gently, setting her butter knife down with a faint clink. "Did you sleep well after that nonsense in the nursery?"
Allesandro did not look up from his newspaper. "I slept fine. The guards swept the nursery. It was just a loose glass bead inside the doll's eye reflecting the moonlight. A child's active imagination."
A barely perceptible release of tension swept across Victoria’s shoulders. It lasted less than a microsecond, but to a man trained to spot a lie before it was fully formed, it was as bright as a signal flare.
"Oh, thank goodness," Victoria sighed, placing a soft hand over her heart. "I felt dreadful thinking I had brought something unsettling into the home. Lily is such a sweet little girl. I wouldn't want her traumatized."
"Indeed," Allesandro replied, folding his paper neatly and setting it aside. He picked up his porcelain espresso cup. "Elena."
The older housekeeper stepped forward immediately. "Yes, Don Moretti?"
"Lily may have her doll back," Allesandro said calmly. "It has been fixed. Make sure she keeps it in her room."
Victoria’s eyes flickered with a brief spark of satisfaction. "That's very kind of you, Allesandro. You have such a big heart for the staff."
"I value loyalty, Victoria," Allesandro said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a chill that made the air in the room drop several degrees. "I protect those who belong to me. And I destroy those who attempt to harm them."
Victoria’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before recovering. "Of course. That is why everyone respects you."
Just then, Dominic entered the room, holding a leather folder. He bowed his head respectfully to Victoria before leaning down to whisper into Allesandro’s ear.
"The boutique in the city is a shell company," Dominic whispered. "Registered three months ago under an off-shore trust tied to the Valenti syndicate. And we found the local relay receiver inside the house."
Allesandro took a slow sip of his coffee. "Where?"
"Inside Victoria’s private dressing room," Dominic whispered back. "Hidden inside the base of her vanity mirror."
Allesandro’s pulse remained completely steady. He set the cup down without a sound.
"Victoria, my dear," Allesandro said smoothly, standing up from the table. "I have several meetings in the city today. Dominic will accompany me. Will you be staying at the estate?"
May you like
"I have a lunch appointment with my charity board at one," she replied brightly. "Then I thought I would do some shopping."
"Enjoy your day," Allesandro said, bending down to imprint a cold, formal kiss upon her cheek. "We will have much to discuss when I return tonight."
