Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

By 2:00 AM, the rain outside the Moretti mansion had turned into a steady, freezing drizzle.

Victoria stood in the master bedroom, packing a small designer leather suitcase. She had received a short text message from an anonymous burner phone ten minutes prior: Port 4 secured. Execute exit.

She smiled to herself, placing her passport, diamonds, and three million dollars in bearer bonds into her bag. She zipped it shut, admiring her reflection in the full-length mirror.

"Going somewhere, my love?"

Victoria spun around, her heart jumping into her throat.

Allesandro stood in the doorway, dressed in a sharp black suit. His coat was gone, his tie loosened slightly, his face completely devoid of emotion.

"Allesandro!" she gasped, quickly forcing a relieved smile onto her face. "You scared me! I... I heard a noise downstairs and was getting worried. I thought I heard cars."

"You did," Allesandro said, stepping into the room and closing the heavy oak door behind him. "Carlo and his entire team just arrived. They are currently downstairs in the holding cells."

Victoria’s breath hitched. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her as pale as the silk sheets on the bed.

"Carlo...?" she stammered, stepping backward until her legs hit the edge of the mattress. "I... I don't know who that is..."

"Don't lie to me, Victoria," Allesandro said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble. "It degrades what little dignity you have left."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the small digital recorder, tossing it onto the bed between them.

He pressed play.

"...I've placed small amounts of ricin into his evening tea canister over the last two weeks..." Victoria’s own voice rang out crisp and clear through the silent room.

Victoria stared at the recording device as if it were a venomous strike-snake. She backed away further, her hands shaking violently.

"Allesandro... listen to me..." she pleaded, her voice rising into a frantic, panicked whisper. "They forced me! The Valenti family... they threatened my life! They said they would kill me if I didn't help them!"

"Your father was Arthur Vance," Allesandro said flatly, walking slowly toward her. "You entered my life six months ago with a forged identity, driven by a foolish desire for revenge over a father who was nothing more than a common thief."

Victoria’s mask crumbled completely. The sweet, gentle woman vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, toxic hatred.

"He was my father!" she screamed, tears of rage springing to her eyes. "You destroyed him! You sent him to die in a cage!"

"He sent himself there when he stole from me," Allesandro replied, standing right in front of her. "And now, you have walked into the exact same trap."

The door opened, and two female security officers walked into the room, holding heavy leather restraints.

"Take her downstairs," Allesandro ordered, not looking at her again as he turned his back. "Lock her in the West Wing cell. Keep her alive until Don Valenti is brought in."

"You're a monster, Moretti!" Victoria shrieked as the guards pinned her arms behind her back, dragging her struggling, screaming body out into the hallway. "You hear me?! A monster!"

May you like

Allesandro walked out onto the balcony, listening to her screams fade into the depths of the mansion.

He looked down at his clean hands, feeling no triumph, only a deep, profound tiredness.
