Chapter 7 - The Garden Cottage

By Wednesday afternoon, the storm clouds that had hovered over Greenwich for a week had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, sunny early spring sky.

The news of Vance’s "sudden resignation" and departure for Europe had settled the stock market, pushing Hargrove Industries shares to an all-time high. But inside the iron gates of the Greenwich estate, the corporate world felt a million miles away.

Julian walked down the stone path leading to the garden cottage at the edge of the property.

The cottage was bathed in afternoon sunlight. Roses were beginning to bud along the stone porch railings, and from inside, he could hear the warm sound of a radio playing a soft Spanish acoustic guitar song.

He knocked gently on the wooden door.

Camila opened it. She wore a simple cream sweater and jeans, her dark hair falling loosely over her shoulders. When she saw Julian, a genuine, radiant smile broke across her face.

"Mr. Hargrove," she said, stepping back to let him inside. "We saw the news on television. Congratulations."

Julian stepped into the cottage. The air inside smelled of cinnamon, vanilla, and clean linen. Sofia was sitting on a soft rug in the living room, building a house out of small plastic blocks.

"It's over," Julian said softly, looking around the cozy, bright room. "Vance is gone. The board is secure."

He looked at Camila, his grey eyes softening completely. "And it wouldn't have happened without you."

"I just cooked a meal, Julian," Camila replied modestely, using his first name for the first time without realizing it.

"You did far more than cook a meal," Julian said, taking a step toward her. "You reminded me of who I was. You brought light into a house that had been dark for five long years."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box, holding it out to her.

Camila hesitated, her breath catching in her chest. "Julian... I can't accept—"

"Open it," he requested gently.

Camila opened the box. Inside, sitting on white silk, was the ancient platinum sapphire ring—the heirloom Sofia had found beneath the study floorboards.

"Julian," Camila whispered, her eyes filling with tears as she looked from the ring up to his face. "This belonged to your wife's family. This is Charlotte's heritage. I can't take this."

"Charlotte would have wanted it to be with someone who saved this family," Julian said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I don't want this ring sitting in a dark box in a cold study anymore, Camila. I want it to belong to a home where there is love, laughter, and a future."

He took the ring from the box and held Camila’s hand gently. His touch was warm, strong, and reverent.

"I am not asking you to forget Mateo," Julian whispered, looking deep into her eyes. "And I will never forget Charlotte or Emily. But we are both still alive, Camila. And for the first time in five years, I want to live."

Camila looked down at their joined hands, then over at Sofia, who was watching them with her bright, dark eyes. The pain of her past, the fear of poverty, and the solitude of her grief seemed to dissolve in the warmth of the small room.

"Slide it onto my finger, Julian," Camila whispered softly, a tear escaping her eye and shining on her cheek.

Julian slipped the ancient sapphire ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
