Chapter 17 - The Aftermath of Fire

The drive back to the Vale estate was the longest thirty minutes of Ronan’s life. Sirens wailed across the city as emergency vehicles rushed toward the affluent neighborhood. When Ronan’s SUV tore through the destroyed iron gates, his heart sank. The roof of the east wing was engulfed in flames, thick black smoke billowing into the early morning sky.
He jumped out of the moving vehicle before it even came to a complete stop, running past the firefighters and police officers. "Seraphina! Seraphina!" he roared, his voice cracking with an agony he had never felt before.
A figure emerged from the medical tents set up on the lawn. It was Seraphina, her white linen dress stained with soot and blood, her hair tangled, but her posture proud and unbroken. She was holding Liam’s hand, with Ava standing right beside her. Ethan and Marcus stood guard behind them, wounded but alive.
Ronan fell to his knees on the grass, wrapping his arms around his family, pulling them so close he could feel their heartbeats. He buried his face in Seraphina’s neck, weeping silently as the fire reflected in his dark eyes.
"I’m sorry," he whispered over and over. "I’m so sorry I brought the darkness back to you."
Seraphina gently lifted his chin, her thumb tracing the new cut on his cheek. She reached into his torn vest pocket and pulled out the gold key, which was still intact. "You didn't bring the darkness, Ronan. You ended it. Look at the house. The dark furniture, the old syndicate walls... they’re burning. Let them burn. We don't need this place anymore."

The physical destruction of the Vale estate marked the final death of the Chicago syndicate. The federal government, using the data recovered from Viktor’s tablet and Ronan’s full cooperation, launched a massive sweep that eliminated the remaining factions of the underground network across the Midwest.
But the emotional scars were deep. The children were traumatized by the attack, and Ronan found himself staying awake at night, pacing the perimeter of their temporary hotel suite, unable to shake the feeling that another assassin was waiting in the shadows. The drama was shifting from a physical battle to a psychological war for peace.
