Chapter 19 - The House on the Cliffs

They arrived in Maine during a spectacular crimson sunset. The SUV climbed a narrow, winding road surrounded by towering pine trees until the forest opened up, revealing a breathtaking vista of the Atlantic Ocean.

Perched on the very edge of a rugged granite cliff stood their new home. It was a masterpiece of modern architectural design—built from natural stone, reclaimed timber, and massive glass walls that offered an unobstructed view of the infinite blue sea below. There were no iron gates, no security cameras hidden in the trees, and no bodyguards standing at the door.

The air was sharp, clean, and filled with the thunderous, comforting sound of the waves crashing against the rocks below.

The children jumped out of the car, running toward the wide wooden deck with gasps of delight. "Mom! Dad! Look at the ocean! There are boats in the distance!" Ava shouted, her face glowing in the twilight.

Ronan walked up behind Seraphina, his hands resting on her shoulders as they stood on the edge of the property, breathing in the salty air. "It’s exactly how you pictured it, isn't it?"

"It’s better," she whispered, tears of pure joy welling in her eyes. "It feels... clean. Like the world has been washed new."

They spent the next month unpacking boxes, choosing furniture together, and embedding themselves into the small, welcoming coastal community. Ronan spent his days working with his hands, building a wooden playset for the kids in the backyard and planting a new patch of wild roses that could survive the harsh ocean winds.

Seraphina opened a small bakery in the nearby town, sharing her love for cooking with the locals, who knew her only as a kind, radiant woman with a beautiful family. The transition was peaceful, but Ronan still struggled with the silence of the night. He would often wake up at 3:00 AM, walking the halls of the house, checking the locks, unable to fully accept that the war was truly over.

One night, during a heavy summer thunderstorm, Seraphina found him standing by the massive glass wall in the living room, watching the lightning flash over the dark ocean. His shoulders were tense, his fists clenched at his sides.

She walked up to him, wrapping her arms around his bare chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart. "They aren't coming, Ronan. The storm is outside now. It’s not inside our house anymore."

Ronan turned around, pulling her into his embrace, burying his face in her hair. "I’m trying, Seraphina. I’m trying to let it go."

"We’ll do it together," she promised. "Just like everything else."
