Chapter 20 - The Endless Summer

A year after the destruction of the Chicago estate, the Maine sun was warm and bright, casting a brilliant sparkle over the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.
The lawn of the cliffside house was covered in soft green grass, where a long wooden table had been set up for a small, private celebration. The air was filled with the delicious scent of fresh lobster rolls, homemade lemon tarts from Seraphina’s bakery, and the crisp sea breeze.
Sarah, Ethan, and Marcus had flown in for the weekend. Marcus’s wounds had healed perfectly, and he was currently laughing as he chased the children across the grass with a garden hose. Ethan sat at the table, enjoying a glass of white wine, looking more relaxed than he ever had in Chicago.
Seraphina stood by the edge of the cliff deck, wearing a beautiful, flowing white linen dress that mirrored the one she had worn a year ago. Her hair was down, blowing softly in the ocean wind. Her skin was glowing, her eyes bright, and completely free of the shadows of her past. She looked out at the infinite blue horizon, a serene smile on her face.
She felt a pair of strong, familiar arms wrap around her waist from behind.
"You're hiding again, Mrs. Vale," Ronan whispered in her ear, his lips brushing against her warm shoulder.
She turned in his arms, her hands resting comfortably on his chest. His face was clean, the tension entirely gone from his eyes, his expression completely relaxed and filled with a profound, unshakeable peace.
"I’m not hiding," she laughed, her voice clear and musical, blending with the sound of the seagulls above. "I’m just enjoying the view."
"The view is much better from here," Ronan said, looking down at her with a love so intense, so pure, it took her breath away. He reached into his pocket, but instead of a weapon or a key, he pulled out a small, delicate gold chain with a pendant shaped like a tiny rosebud.
He fastened it around her neck, his fingers gentle against her skin. "A reminder of where we started, and how far we’ve come."
Seraphina touched the warm gold pendant, looking back toward the beautiful glass house where her children were laughing with their closest friends. She remembered the terrified, weeping maid who had stood over the sink two years ago, convinced she was nothing but a ghost in someone else's house.
She looked up at the man who had torn down a kingdom just to give her a home, the man who had healed his own soul by learning how to love her.
"I love you, Ronan," she whispered, her heart full.

"I loved you the moment you flinched, Seraphina," he said, pulling her close, his arms creating a sanctuary that no darkness could ever penetrate. "Because I knew, even then, that I would spend the rest of my life making sure you never flinched again."
He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, slow, and passionate kiss—a kiss that carried the weight of their survival, the joy of their freedom, and the promise of an endless, beautiful summer. The rain had finally stopped forever, leaving behind a bright, beautiful, and limitless horizon. They were finally, truly, home.
