Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Cuff

The copper smell of blood hung heavy in the narrow concrete corridor. It hit Ivy’s nostrils before her mind could fully process the crimson stain soaking through the cuff of Carmine’s white dress shirt.

She scrambled backward, her heels skidding against the slick slate floor of the kitchen. Her back hit the industrial prep counter, her hand knocking over a stack of metal measuring cups that clattered loudly in the silence.

Carmine didn't flinch at the noise. He stepped past the threshold and pushed the heavy oak door shut behind him.

Click.

The deadbolt turned under his thumb with effortless precision.

"You're shaking," he observed, his low baritone cutting through her hyperventilating breaths.

"Is... is he..." Ivy couldn't finish the sentence. The words choked her. Her left eye, swollen almost completely shut, pulsed with a hot, localized agony, but her good eye was wide with raw terror as she stared at his bloody wrist.

Carmine walked casually to the sink, stepping into the harsh fluorescent ring of overhead light. "Rocco is no longer an employee of this estate," he said flatly.

He turned on the cold water tap. He reached up, unbuttoned his left cuff, and pulled the fabric back. He held his raw, scraped knuckles directly under the icy stream. Pink-tinted water swirled down the stainless steel drain.

"Did you... did you kill him?" she whispered, her hands clutching her bruised ribs beneath her gray apron.

Carmine turned his head slightly, his dark, heavy-lidded gaze fixing on her. There was no rage in his eyes. There was something far worse—a chilling, absolute void.

"In my world, Ivy, men who put their hands on defenseless women under my roof do not receive severance packages. They are erased. The trash has been removed from the premises. That is all you need to concern yourself with."

He grabbed a clean paper towel from the dispenser, wiped his hands dry, and tossed the blood-stained paper into the metal bin. He reached into his trouser pocket, pulled out a heavy gold key ring, and detached a single silver key with a custom black head.

He stepped toward her. Instinctively, Ivy flinched, pulling her shoulders tight.

Carmine stopped two feet away. He extended his hand, holding out the key.

"This is the key to the master suite on the third floor," he said.

Ivy stared at the metal key resting in his palm. "I... I clean the third floor on Thursdays, sir. It's not Thursday."

"You aren't going up there to clean, Ivy," Carmine replied, his voice dropping an octave, losing its sharp edge and taking on a quiet, command-like warmth. "You are moving in."

Her head snapped up. "What?"

"Rocco was not a solitary actor in this city. He had associates. Men who drank with him, men who knew his habits," Carmine explained, his tone smooth and logical, as if laying out a corporate restructuring. "When he fails to show up for his shift at six o'clock this morning, questions will be asked. If anyone suspects you had a hand in his sudden departure, you become a target."

"I don't have a hand in anything!" she cried, a tear cutting a warm path through the dried blood on her cheek. "I just wash dishes! I clean your floors!"

"And now you sleep in my wing," Carmine countered, taking a single step closer until she could smell the subtle scent of cedar, tobacco, and cold rain on his skin. "There are sixteen armed guards stationed around the perimeter of this mansion at all times. But the only place on this property that is completely impenetrable is behind my door. You take the guest room inside my private quarters."

"I can't do that, sir. The other staff... the housekeepers... if they see me walking up those stairs—"

"The staff will be told that you have been promoted to my personal executive assistant," Carmine said coldly, shutting down her protest before it could form. "Anyone who looks at you sideways will answer directly to me. Do I make myself clear?"

Ivy looked from his stern, uncompromising jaw down to the key in his hand. She was terrifyingly small, hopelessly broke, and bruised to the bone. She had no leverage, no defense, and no safe place left in the world.

Slowly, her trembling hand reached out. Her fingers brushed against his warm palm as she took the heavy key.

May you like

"Good," Carmine said softly. He reached out, his long fingers gently catching her chin once more. He didn't press; he merely guided her gaze up to his. "Now, put that towel back on your lip. We are going upstairs."

He unlocked the door and stepped into the dark hall, waiting for her. Ivy tucked the key deep into her apron pocket, pressed the damp cloth to her mouth, and followed the ghost of a killer into the light.
