Chapter 3 - THE VANGUARD PROTOCOL

The penthouse suite of the Vanguard Tower towered fifty stories above the city, a sprawling oasis of minimalist glass, white marble, and panoramic views of the glittering skyline. It was a far cry from the modest two-bedroom apartment Leo and I shared near the docks.
I sat wrapped in a plush silk robe, drinking hot chamomile tea while a private medical team checked my scraped knees and treated the mild hypothermia from the storm. Leo stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, talking on an encrypted satellite phone. His voice was sharp, issuing commands with the cold efficiency of a military commander.
“Freeze their commercial credit lines. Every single one,” Leo ordered into the receiver. “I don't care if it disrupts the local market. If Seraphina Vale tries to withdraw even a single dollar from any Vanguard-affiliated bank, flag it as suspected money laundering. I want her financially paralyzed by sunrise.”
He ended the call and walked over to me, kneeling beside my chair. The terrifying aura of the billionaire tycoon melted away, replaced entirely by the tender husband who used to make me burnt toast on Sunday mornings.
“How are you feeling, sweetheart?” he asked, kissing the back of my hand.
“I feel like I’m dreaming, Leo,” I admitted, looking at the city lights below. “Yesterday, I was worried about how we were going to afford my father's medical bills that Seraphina refused to pay. Tonight, I find out my husband can crash the stock market with a phone call.”
Leo sighed, rubbing his temples. “My family's wealth has always been a curse, Clara. It attracts parasites, liars, and people like Seraphina. When I met you, and you looked at me with so much genuine kindness despite thinking I had nothing... I fell in love with you instantly. I wanted to protect that. I wanted us to have a normal life, free from the vultures.”
“I’m not angry that you hid it, Leo,” I said softly, reaching out to touch his face. “I’m just... I’m angry about my father. He built Vale Enterprises with his own sweat and tears. Seraphina manipulated his medication during his final weeks. I know she did. He would never have signed a will leaving everything to her and completely cutting me out. He loved me.”
Leo’s expression hardened into granite. “Then we prove it. I’ve already mobilized our private intelligence team. They are reviewing your father's medical records, the notary who witnessed the signing of the new will, and Seraphina’s financial transactions over the last six months.”
The door to the penthouse opened, and a woman in a sharp navy blue pantsuit walked in, carrying a thick digital ledger. This was Marcus, Leo’s chief of staff and a legendary legal strategist in the corporate world.
“Mr. Vanguard, Mrs. Vanguard,” Marcus said, bowing her head respectfully. “We’ve run the initial diagnostics on Vale Enterprises. Seraphina Vale has already called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. She intends to formally announce herself as the new Chairperson and CEO, and she has invited several high-society media outlets to cover her 'triumphant ascension'.”
“Has she?” I asked, a cold smile forming on my lips. “She couldn't even wait twenty-four hours after his funeral.”
“She’s arrogant, ma'am,” Marcus replied. “She believes she is untouchable now because she holds the majority shares. What she doesn't know is that Vale Enterprises owes approximately four hundred million dollars in high-interest short-term loans to a secondary lending firm called Apex Credit.”
Leo looked up at Marcus, a dangerous smirk playing on his lips. “And who owns Apex Credit, Marcus?”
“We do, sir,” Marcus smiled back. “Vanguard acquired them through a shell company last fiscal quarter.”

Leo stood up, adjusting his cuffs. He looked down at me, his eyes dancing with a lethal sort of amusement. “Well, Clara, it seems your stepmother wants to play the role of a corporate queen. What do you say we attend her coronation tomorrow morning?”
“I wouldn't miss it for the world,” I said, the grief in my heart suddenly replaced by a thrilling anticipation of justice.
