Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING IN COURT

The criminal trial of Seraphina Vale became the most scrutinized legal battle in the state’s history. For six weeks, the courtroom was a battleground of high-stakes corporate drama and forensic revelations.
Seraphina’s defense team, paid for by the remnants of her hidden offshore funds, tried every trick in the book. They claimed the medical records were manipulated by Vanguard’s intelligence team, that the notary public was coerced into a false confession, and that I was simply a vengeful daughter who couldn't accept her father's genuine final wishes.
But their defense crumbled into dust when Leo took the stand.
The gallery went dead silent as the billionaire tycoon, the man who controlled the financial destiny of millions, walked into the courtroom. He wore a crisp, dark charcoal suit, his presence commanding absolute respect from the judge, the jury, and every legal professional in the room.
The defense attorney tried to rattle him. “Mr. Vanguard, isn't it true that you used your immense wealth and corporate leverage to intentionally systematically isolate and destroy my client’s financial standing prior to any formal indictment?”
Leo looked at the defense attorney, his expression as calm and unmovable as a mountain range. “I didn't use my wealth to destroy her. I used my wealth to pull back the curtain she was hiding behind. A woman who systematically poisons her ailing husband, steals from a children’s charity foundation, and attempts to ruin an innocent young woman doesn't need corporate leverage to be destroyed. She simply needs the truth to catch up to her.”
He turned his eyes toward the jury, his voice filled with a deep, resonant sincerity. “I have spent my life surrounded by people who hide behind money, titles, and fake refinement. My wife, Clara, is the only person I have ever met who possesses a wealth that cannot be measured in a bank ledger—the wealth of honor, love, and resilience. Seraphina Vale tried to erase that. And as her husband, it is my legal and moral duty to ensure that the scale of justice is balanced.”
When the jury returned with their verdict after less than two hours of deliberation, the answer was absolute.
Guilty on all counts.
The judge showed absolutely no leniency. Seraphina Vale was sentenced to twenty-five years in a maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole. Her daughter, Vivienne, was found complicit in the concealment of embezzled funds and sentenced to three years of community correction and mandatory financial restitution.
The fake will was formally declared null and void by the court.
As the judge slammed his gavel down for the final time, declaring me the sole, undisputed heir to the entire Vale estate, I felt a massive, invisible weight lift off my shoulders.

I looked back at the gallery, where Leo was standing, a soft, incredibly proud smile on his face. I ran past the low wooden gate, throwing my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder as the tears of relief finally spilled over.
“It’s over, Clara,” he whispered, his strong arms holding me so tightly I felt entirely invincible. “You brought him home. Your father’s legacy is safe.”
