Chapter 4 - The Legal Empire Fractures

The news of the "Vance Horror House" broke across national news networks by noon.
Reporters, satellite trucks, and curious onlookers flooded the narrow country road leading to Old Mill Road. The local police department, horrified by their own failure ten years ago to properly investigate Sarah’s disappearance, turned the entire three-acre Vance estate into a crime scene.
In a high-rise office building in downtown Philadelphia, Marcus Vance—my uncle, Eleanor’s older brother, and the managing partner of Vance & Sterling Legal Trust— sat behind a massive mahogany desk.
I pushed past his executive secretary without knocking, throwing a heavy stack of audited bank records onto his polished desk.
"David," Marcus said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair, though the twitch in his left eye betrayed his terror. "I heard about the... tragic situation at Eleanor's home. It's monstrous. I've already spoken to the press to clarify that our firm has zero connection—"
"Shut up, Marcus," I said, slamming both palms onto his desk. "I spent the last four hours with forensic accountants from the FBI. Eleanor didn't build that subterranean bunker alone. It took three hundred thousand dollars in cash payments to un-permitted contractors in 2016."
Marcus turned pale. "David, your mother was a deeply disturbed woman who acted independently—"
"The payments were authorized from your private client escrow account, Uncle Marcus," I leaned in, my voice low and lethal. "You helped her hide Dad’s life insurance money, you signed off on Sarah’s forged death certificate, and you kept forty percent of the trust yield every single year."
Marcus reached for his desk phone. "I think you need to leave before I call security."
The office doors swung open behind me. Four agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent Vance (no relation), stepped into the room, holding a red-sealed federal warrant.
"Marcus Vance," Agent Vance announced, pulling out steel cuffs. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and accessory to murder after the fact."

Marcus looked at me, his eyes wide with disbelief as the agents forced his arms behind his back. "David... I'm your family!"
"My family is in the hospital, Marcus," I replied coldness as they dragged him out. "You're just a parasite whose time ran out."
