Chapter 5 - The Pre-Trial Ambush

Monday morning arrived with a clear, cold sky over downtown Atlanta.
The Fulton County Superior Courthouse was a massive structure of polished marble and vaulted ceilings. As Robert, Chloe, and I walked up the wide stone steps, a small cluster of local news reporters was already gathered near the entrance. Damian’s public relations campaign had drawn attention to the case, exactly as he had planned.
Standing at the top of the stairs, flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys in immaculate charcoal suits, was Damian Prescott.
He looked striking, confident, and completely in control. When he saw us approaching, he turned to the television cameras, putting on a tragic, weary smile.
"I just want my wife to get the help she needs," Damian told a reporter with a microphone. "Family trauma is a delicate issue, and I love Chloe deeply despite the terrible lies her mother has fed her."
We walked past him without making eye contact, following Robert into the carpeted hallway outside Courtroom 402.
Inside, the courtroom was quiet and cool. Judge Arthur Vance (no relation to Robert, though a veteran jurist known for his sharp mind and zero tolerance for grandstanding) sat behind the elevated wooden bench, reviewing the case file.
"Mr. Prescott’s counsel may proceed," Judge Vance stated, adjusting his glasses.
Damian’s lead attorney, a slick, silver-tongued man named Julian Croft, stood up confidently.
"Your Honor," Croft began, his voice echoing smoothly through the quiet courtroom. "We are here today on an emergency petition to protect both a thriving local business and a vulnerable individual. My client, Mr. Damian Prescott, is the sole owner of The Hearth LLC. His wife, Chloe, signed a comprehensive operating agreement detailing her duties as brand director. Regrettably, due to severe psychological distress, Mrs. Prescott abandoned her post four days ago, taking proprietary financial records, client lists, and operational passwords with her."
Croft pointed a dramatic finger at Chloe, who sat beside Robert, holding her head high.
"Furthermore," Croft continued, "her mother, Margaret Miller, has engaged in a campaign of harassment, making wild, unsubstantiated claims of physical abuse and starvation. We request an immediate court order directing Mrs. Prescott to undergo a sixty-day inpatient psychiatric assessment, the immediate return of all business property, and a temporary restraining order keeping Mrs. Miller two hundred yards away from both my client and his restaurant."
Judge Vance remained impassive. He turned his gaze to Robert.
"Mr. Vance," the judge said. "Your response?"
Robert stood up slowly. He didn't look at Damian or his high-priced lawyers. He simply buttoned his suit jacket and walked to the center podium, carrying a leather binder.
"Your Honor," Robert began, his voice quiet, calm, and weighted with immense authority. "My opposing counsel has painted a lovely picture of a concerned husband trying to help a sick wife. It is a compelling story. Unfortunately for Mr. Prescott, stories are built on imagination. Evidence, on the other hand, is built on facts."
Robert opened the binder.
"First," Robert said, "regarding the 'operating agreement' my client allegedly signed voluntarily. We submit an emergency motion to invalidate that document on the grounds of extreme duress, unconscionability, and civil fraud. We have attached medical records from Atlanta General Hospital, compiled Friday afternoon, showing that Chloe Prescott was suffering from severe malnutrition, chronic dehydration, and physical contusions consistent with prolonged domestic captivity."
Julian Croft jumped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! These medical reports were generated after she was abducted by her mother!"
"Sit down, Mr. Croft!" Judge Vance barked, his eyes flashing behind his glasses. "Let Mr. Vance finish!"
Robert didn't lose a beat. "Second, regarding the claim that my client stole 'proprietary business records.' My client did not steal anything. She acted as a brave whistle-blower preserving evidence of ongoing, multi-million-dollar tax fraud, labor trafficking, and commercial extortion."
Robert pulled three thick color-printed documents from his binder and laid them on the clerk's desk.
"What you have before you, Your Honor, are certified copies of two distinct financial ledgers maintained by Damian Prescott. One submitted to the IRS reporting annual revenues of four hundred thousand dollars, and a second, hidden ledger—kept in a safe beneath the walk-in freezer at The Hearth—documenting two point four million dollars in undeclared cash transactions."
Damian’s face lost every single drop of color.
His polished, arrogant smile completely shattered. He leaned over to grab his attorney’s arm, whispering frantically, his composure disintegrating in real time.
"And finally, Your Honor," Robert concluded, turning to face Damian directly, "I am pleased to inform the court that twenty minutes ago, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia issued a federal seizure warrant for The Hearth LLC, alongside a grand jury subpoena issued by the Special Investigations Unit of the Internal Revenue Service."

As if on cue, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
Four federal agents wearing dark suits and gold badges stepped quietly into the gallery, their eyes fixed firmly on Damian Prescott.
