Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

In November, six months after the night I found Chloe on the kitchen floor of The Hearth, the criminal trial of United States v. Damian Prescott took place at the federal courthouse in downtown Atlanta.
Damian had rejected three plea bargains, still arrogantly believing his charm and legal technicalities could save him.
The trial lasted four days.
On the third day, Chloe took the witness stand.
She wore a tailored navy-blue blazer, her hair styled neatly, her posture elegant and completely composed. Sitting in the defense chair across the room, wearing a orange jumpsuit and heavy plastic-frame glasses, Damian looked withered, gaunt, and completely stripped of his former grandeur.
For two hours, Chloe delivered her testimony.
She didn't cry. She didn't falter. She spoke with absolute clarity, detailing the systematic isolation, the forged contracts, the secret cash ledgers, and the psychological torture she had endured.
When Damian’s court-appointed public defender attempted to cross-examine her, trying to suggest she was a willing participant in the restaurant's financial management, Chloe pulled out precise dates, account numbers, and verified cloud timestamps that completely dismantled every single argument he raised.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
The verdict was unanimous: Guilty on all sixteen counts, including federal tax fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, and labor exploitation.
Three weeks later, the sentencing hearing took place.
Judge William Thomas, a stern federal judge known for imposing maximum sentences in white-collar financial crimes, looked down from his bench at Damian Prescott.
"Mr. Prescott," Judge Thomas declared, his voice echoing through the silent, crowded courtroom. "In my twenty-five years on the federal bench, I have rarely seen a case of such calculated, sociopathic cruelty. You did not merely cheat the government of taxes; you used the sanctity of marriage and commercial law to enslave a talented young woman, strip her of her human dignity, and treat her like livestock in your kitchen."
The judge slammed his hand onto his desk.
"It is the sentence of this court that you be remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a period of fourteen years and six months, without the possibility of parole. You are further ordered to pay two point two million dollars in criminal restitution."
As the guards stepped forward to lead Damian away to begin his decade and a half in federal prison, he turned his head, desperately looking toward the gallery one last time.

He didn't see a broken, weeping girl.
He saw Chloe sitting between me and Robert Vance, holding her head high, surrounded by a wall of love and legal protection he could never break again.
