Chapter 7 - The Unraveling Empire

By four o'clock that afternoon, news of Damian Prescott’s arrest had sent shockwaves through the Atlanta culinary and business community.

Local television crews were stationed outside The Hearth, broadcasting live footage of federal agents carrying dozens of cardboard boxes, computer towers, and silver filing cabinets out of the front entrance. A bright yellow government seal was slapped across the grand oak doors: PROPERTY SEIZED BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT.

Inside Robert Vance’s conference room, the atmosphere was vastly different from the morning. The dark terror that had gripped our lives for months had finally begun to lift, replaced by a deep, profound sense of justice.

Sarah Lin sat at the table, reviewing the real-time financial freezes executed by the federal court.

"It’s a complete collapse," Sarah reported, showing us her screen. "Damian’s landlord, Marcus Sterling, began cooperating with federal prosecutors thirty minutes after his arrest. Sterling admitted that Damian was using the cash from the restaurant to fund offshore real estate ventures and pay off high-risk gambling debts in Miami."

"What about Chloe’s initial eighty-five thousand dollars?" I asked, holding my daughter’s hand. "The money from her graphic design studio?"

Robert smiled, taking a sip of his tea. "Because we filed our civil RICO lawsuit prior to the federal seizure, Chloe’s claim on her original capital investment takes priority as a victim of commercial fraud. Sarah has already tracked forty thousand dollars of those funds in an escrow account Sterling was holding. We will recover every single cent, plus interest."

Chloe let out a long, shuddering breath. For the first time in four years, a genuine, radiant smile touched her lips.

"It was never really about the money, Robert," Chloe said softly. "It was about getting my life back. It was about knowing that I wasn't crazy."

"You were never crazy, sweetheart," I said, kissing her temple. "You were just trapped by a predator."

"What happens to him now?" Chloe asked, looking at Robert.

"The U.S. Attorney’s office is preparing a sixteen-count indictment," Robert explained. "Between the tax evasion, the labor violations, the money laundering, and the domestic abuse evidence we provided to the district attorney, Damian is facing a mandatory minimum of twelve to fifteen years in federal prison. He won't be setting foot in a restaurant again for a very, very long time—unless he’s working in the prison mess hall."

The poetic justice of that statement hung in the air, sweet and absolute.

Suddenly, Chloe’s temporary phone buzzed on the table.

She picked it up. It was a text message from an unknown number. She opened it, and her eyes widened in surprise.

"Who is it, Chloe?" I asked, feeling a brief pang of anxiety.

Chloe looked at me, her eyes sparkling with hope. "It’s from Maya... my old lead designer from the Richmond studio. She saw the news about Damian’s arrest. She said the creative agency we used to contract with just lost their art director, and they want to know if I’m available for a freelance project next month."

I felt tears prick my eyes. "What are you going to tell her?"

May you like

Chloe stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the sunlit Atlanta skyline.

"I’m going to tell her," Chloe said, her voice strong, clear, and brimming with confidence, "that I’m back in business."
