Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum at the Diner

That afternoon, Julian didn't go back to his office. He drove straight across the bridge into Queens, his knuckles white against the steering wheel of his car. The threat his mother had made echoed in his mind like a ticking time bomb. If he fought her head-on without a strategy, she would destroy him, strip him of his resources, and—worst of all—use her immense legal power to crush Claire and take the boys away.

He needed to talk to Claire. He needed to warn her.

He found her at a small, old-fashioned diner three blocks from her apartment. She was sitting in a vinyl booth near the back, nursing a cup of black coffee while reviewing a stack of freelance restoration documents spread out across the table.

Julian slid into the booth opposite her without asking.

Claire looked up, her expression hardening instantly. "I didn't invite you here, Julian."

"My mother knows," Julian blurted out, cutting straight through the tension.

Claire froze. Her pen slipped from her fingers, rolling across the laminated table.

"What?" she whispered.

"My mother knows everything," Julian said, running a tired hand through his hair. "She has files, photographs, addresses. She knows about the boys. And she’s threatening to invoke the senior veto clause at Carter Global to strip me of my position, my shares, and my legal standing if I don't comply with her demands."

"And what are her demands?" Claire asked, her voice dropping to a trembling, dangerous whisper.

"She wants the boys tested and brought into the family estate," Julian said, his eyes avoiding hers out of sheer shame. "And she wants you... she wants you to take a financial settlement and leave New York forever."

For three long seconds, Claire didn't move. Then, a cold, bitter laugh escaped her lips.

"Of course," she muttered, shaking her head as tears of pure fury welled in her eyes. "Of course she does. The great Margaret Carter can't have a common archivist tainting her precious bloodline. She wants to buy me off—just like you tried to do five years ago."

"Claire, listen to me," Julian pleaded, leaning across the table and grabbing her wrists. "I am not going to let that happen. I am fighting her. I'm restructuring my assets, moving capital offshore, and—"

"You can't fight her, Julian!" Claire yelled, yanking her hands away from his grip. Several patrons at nearby booths turned to look. She lowered her voice, hissing across the table. "You think your mother is just a rich old lady? She owns judges, politicians, and half the corporate boardrooms in Manhattan. If you declare war on her for us, she will chew you up, spit you out, and leave my children with nothing!"

"So what do you suggest we do?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking with desperation. "Just roll over and let her banish you?"

May you like

"I suggest," Claire said, standing up from the booth so fast her chair screeched against the floor, "that you stay away from us. You brought this on us five years ago when you handed me that envelope on Madison Avenue. This is the harvest of your cowardice, Julian. Live with it."

She grabbed her bag and stormed out of the diner into the crisp autumn air, leaving Julian sitting alone in the booth as the weight of his sins crashed down upon him with crushing force.
