Chapter 8 - Inside the Lion’s Den

The Manhattan estate of the Carter family on Fifth Avenue was a monument to old-money wealth—limestone pillars, crystal chandeliers, vaulted ceilings, and priceless oil paintings lining the corridors.

When Claire was escorted through the double mahogany doors into the grand conservatory, her breath caught.

Ethan and Leo were sitting at a small mahogany table eating chocolate-chip cookies and drinking milk served by a butler in white gloves, looking entirely unbothered by the fact that they had just been abducted.

"Mommy!" Leo yelled, dropping his cookie and running across the Persian rug to hug her knees. "Look! The nice lady gave us cookies!"

Claire scooped Leo up, clutching him fiercely against her chest, while using her free arm to pull Ethan tight against her side.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the private garden was Margaret Carter, sipping tea from her porcelain cup. She turned slowly, her diamond rings catching the morning light.

"Thank you, Arthur. You may wait outside," Margaret said quietly.

The lawyer nodded and slipped out of the conservatory, closing the heavy doors behind him.

"You are a monster," Claire said, her voice shaking as she stared down the matriarch of Carter Global. "Kidnapping five-year-old children? Have you no human decency at all?"

Margaret didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of her tea before setting it down on a marble pedestal.

"I did not kidnap them, my dear. I simply facilitated a long-overdue family reunion," Margaret replied smoothly, walking closer to inspect the boys. Her eyes lingered on Leo's gray eyes and Ethan's serious brow. "They have the Carter features, there is no denying that. Intelligent, striking, unmistakably ours."

"They are mine," Claire hissed. "Not yours. Not Julian's. Mine."

"Biologically, yes. But legally and financially, they belong to the world they were born into," Margaret said, her tone hardening into absolute steel. "Let’s dispense with the melodrama, Claire. You know why you're here. I offered you a settlement three days ago. Name your price. Five million? Ten million? A penthouse in London? Take the money, sign the non-disclosure agreement, and board a flight out of New York tonight. You will never see Julian again, and the boys will be raised as true Carters."

Claire stared at the woman who represented everything corrupted by wealth and power in this city. For a brief second, she thought of the Astoria apartment, the crushing debt, the endless nights of work. Ten million dollars would buy a lifetime of security.

Then she looked down at Ethan and Leo, who were holding onto her jacket with trusting, innocent hands.

"You think everything has a price tag, don't you?" Claire said softly, a fierce, defiant pride burning in her brown eyes. "You think you can buy a mother’s soul because your bank account has more zeros than mine. Well, let me tell you something, Margaret Carter: you can keep your billions. You can keep your limestone mansion, your stock shares, and your pathetic, lonely empire."

Before Margaret could reply, the heavy mahogany doors of the conservatory slammed open with a deafening crash.

Julian stood in the doorway, chest heaving, his tie ripped off and his shirt collar torn. He looked like a man who had driven through city traffic at a hundred miles an hour, ready to tear the building down brick by brick.

"Mother," Julian roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted glass ceiling. "If you ever touch my sons—or Claire—again, I swear to God I will burn this entire dynasty to ash."
