Chapter 7 - The Abduction That Wasn't

Two days later, the trap snapped shut.

It was a crisp Saturday morning. Claire had walked Ethan and Leo three blocks down to their local public park, where the boys loved chasing pigeons near the fountain while she caught up on freelance emails on her phone.

She looked up for thirty seconds to reply to an urgent client message.

When she looked back up toward the fountain...

Ethan and Leo were gone.

"Ethan? Leo?" Claire called out, her voice pitching into immediate, blind panic.

She sprinted toward the fountain, dropping her phone onto the grass. The playground was nearly empty. Only an old man walking a golden retriever and a mother pushing a stroller were nearby. None of them had seen the boys.

"Leo! Ethan!" she screamed, her heart hammering against her ribs like a sledgehammer.

Panic clawed at her throat. She pulled her phone out of her pocket with trembling fingers and dialed 911, but before she could press dial, a black Lincoln Navigator pulled up illegally beside the curb, its tinted rear door sliding open.

A tall man in a bespoke gray suit—Arthur Vance, Margaret Carter’s personal lawyer—stepped out of the vehicle.

"Mrs. Bennett," Arthur said smoothly, adjusting his tie. "Please, get in the vehicle. The boys are safe."

Claire lunged at him, her fingernails clawing at his lapel with the fury of a cornered tigress. "Where are my sons?! What did you do with my boys, you bastard?!"

Two security guards stepped out of the Navigator, gently restraining Claire by her arms without hurting her, though she fought them like a wild animal.

"Calm down, Mrs. Bennett. No one is hurt," Arthur said calmly, brushing off his jacket. "Mrs. Carter simply wished to meet her grandchildren in a controlled, private environment. They are currently being driven to the Manhattan estate for lunch and evaluation. If you wish to see them, I suggest you get in the car."

Claire’s blood ran cold. Margaret Carter had crossed the ultimate line. She hadn't just threatened legal action—she had kidnapped her five-year-old grandsons off a public playground to force Claire's hand.

"If so much as a hair on their heads is harmed," Claire whispered, her voice dripping with venom so toxic it made Arthur step back a half-step, "I will burn Carter Global to the ground if it's the last thing I do on this earth."

She got into the back of the SUV.
