Chapter 10 - Under the Oak Tree

Spring had arrived in Greenwich.

The gardens of the Mercer Estate were in full bloom. Soft pink cherry blossoms drifted through the warm afternoon breeze, and the air smelled of fresh green grass and blooming jasmine.

At 3:00 on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, Ethan Mercer walked out into his private garden.

He wasn't wearing a business suit. He wore a simple navy sweater, rolled-up sleeves, and comfortable jeans. His phone—no longer buzzing with relentless, mindless corporate panic— sat inside on his desk, handled by a newly restructured executive team he actually trusted.

Ethan walked over to the ancient, sprawling oak tree in the center of the lawn.

He sat down against the thick, dark trunk, stretched his legs out over the freshly cut grass, closed his eyes, and rested his head back against the bark.

He wasn't pretending to sleep this time. He was just taking a deep breath, listening to the gentle rustle of leaves overhead and the distant sound of birds singing in the garden.

A few minutes later, soft, tiny footsteps pitter-pattered across the lawn.

Ethan didn't open his eyes, but a soft smile spread across his face as he felt a small four-year-old girl climb onto his chest.

Sophie curled her tiny body right over his heart, her dark curls brushing his chin, her yellow sundress bright against his navy sweater. She rested her cheek against his chest, clutching her one-eared teddy bear, Barnaby.

"Are you sleeping?" Sophie whispered softly.

Ethan slowly opened his eyes, looking down into her wide, bright brown eyes.

"No," Ethan said gently, resting his arm around her tiny back to keep her safe. "I'm just listening."

"Listening to what?"

"Listening to my heart," Ethan said softly. "It's beating very fast because I'm happy."

Sophie smiled, her small hand patting his chest. "I told you Barnaby likes you."

Footsteps sounded on the grass nearby.

Hannah walked out from under the shade of the garden archway, carrying a tray with two tall glasses of lemonade. She wore a simple white summer dress, her blond hair catching the gold sunlight, her face radiant with a peaceful, radiant warmth that Ethan had never seen before.

She set the tray on a small wooden garden table and walked over, sitting on the soft grass right beside Ethan. She leaned her back against his shoulder, looking up at the sunlight flickering between the green oak leaves.

Ethan reached out with his free hand, intertwining his fingers with Hannah’s.

"The legal team finished the trust arrangements today," Ethan said softly, looking at her profile. "The east cottage is officially registered under your name and Sophie's."

Hannah looked at him, a tender, loving smile gracing her lips. "Ethan... you've given us so much already."

"You gave me my life back, Hannah," Ethan said, his voice thick with sincere emotion. He leaned over, gently pressing his lips against hers in a quiet, deep kiss that carried years of unsaid promises, healing, and absolute devotion.

Sophie giggled, covering her eyes with her teddy bear's ear. "Eww! Kissing!"

Ethan and Hannah both broke into genuine, joyful laughter—a sound that echoed through the forty-room estate, breaking sixty years of cold, silent perfection once and for all.

Ethan looked up through the ancient branches of the oak tree toward the bright blue sky above.

The forty-room mansion stood beyond the hedges, no longer a tomb or a fortress, but just a house. The board meetings, the merger contracts, and the endless corporate battles were behind him.

He held Hannah's hand tight in his, felt the warm weight of the little girl resting safely over his beating heart, and realized that for the first time in his life, he was completely, beautifully awake.
