Chapter 5 - Fire in the Dark

The news of the Bridgeport facility fire and Ethan Mercer’s dramatic rescue of a night guard made front-page headlines across the state the next morning.

BILLIONAIRE CEO RISKS LIFE IN WAREHOUSE BLAZE.

INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO MERCER ATLANTIC SAFETY STANDARDS.

In the library of the Mercer Estate, Hannah sat beside Ethan on the sofa, gently applying fresh ointment to the bandaged burn on his lower arm. Ethan sat silently, staring at the charred logbook lying on the coffee table between them.

"You could have died," Hannah said softly, her hands precise and gentle as she wrapped clean white gauze around his arm. "If that roof had collapsed five seconds earlier..."

"I had to get that book, Hannah," Ethan said, looking down at her hands. "It was the only way to prove Caleb wasn't at fault."

Hannah looked up, her brown eyes filling with unshed tears. "Caleb would have liked you, Ethan. He always said the world needed fewer bosses and more men who actually stood for something."

Ethan looked at her, the physical pain of his burned arm fading into insignificance compared to the quiet warmth radiating between them. He reached out with his uninjured hand, his fingertips softly touching her cheek, wiping away a stray tear.

"I spent six years being just like my father," Ethan whispered. "A ghost in a suit. Yesterday, inside that burning building... was the first time I felt like my life actually had a purpose."

Hannah leaned into his touch, her breath catching in her throat. For a brief second, the space between them seemed to disappear completely.

The moment was shattered by the heavy slamming of the library doors.

Eleanor Mercer walked into the room, followed by two men in dark business suits. Her expression was colder than ice as she looked at Ethan's bandaged arm, then at Hannah sitting closely beside him.

"Out," Eleanor commanded, glaring at Hannah. "Leave us immediately."

Hannah began to stand up, but Ethan caught her hand, holding it firmly.

"Stay right where you are, Hannah," Ethan said calmly, looking at his mother. "Mother, if you enter my home unannounced again, I will have security escort you past the gates."

"Your home?" Eleanor laughed bitterly. "Ethan, you have completely ruined this family's standing in less than seventy-two hours! The board held an emergency session at seven this morning. They have officially invoked Article 4."

Ethan didn't blink. "They voted?"

"They voted eight to two to suspend you from your duties as Chief Executive Officer, pending a psychiatric evaluation and a full board review," Eleanor said, stepping closer, her voice sharp as a blade. "Richard Sterling has been appointed interim CEO. You no longer have access to company servers, corporate funds, or executive authority."

She looked down at Hannah with pure venom. "And as for your little companion here... Richard’s legal team has already filed a restraining order and a civil lawsuit accusing her of manipulating a mentally unstable corporate officer for financial gain."

Hannah gasped, her face going pale. "That's not true!"

Ethan stood up slowly, the cold anger in his eyes so intense that even Eleanor instinctively took a step back.

"You brought lawsuits into my house, Mother?" Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, low whisper.

"I am saving this family from your madness!" Eleanor yelled. "Look at you! You are burning down everything your father built for a maid and her bastard child!"

SLAM.

Ethan’s hand struck the surface of the mahogany desk so hard the marble lamp rattled.

"Do not ever speak about her or her child again," Ethan said, every word dripping with absolute ice. "You and Richard think you can strip me of my power with a board vote? You forgot one very crucial detail."

May you like

Eleanor narrowed her eyes. "What detail?"

"My father left me fifty-one percent of the voting equity in the Mercer Family Holding Trust," Ethan said, a slow, cold smile spreading across his lips. "The board only operates because I allow them to. And at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, I am calling a extraordinary shareholder meeting to liquidate the entire board."
