Chapter 7 - A Fractured Family

The battle lines were officially drawn.

With Ethan suspended from executive duties, Richard Sterling blocked Ethan’s access to the company's central legal team and financial databases. But Ethan was far from defenseless. Using his personal wealth, he hired an elite private forensic accounting team and an independent legal firm to prepare for the extraordinary shareholder hearing set for Friday morning.

On Wednesday evening, an unexpected visitor arrived at the main gate of the Mercer Estate.

Mrs. Gable entered Ethan’s private study, looking anxious. "Mr. Mercer... your mother is here again. But she is alone this time. She insists on speaking with you."

Ethan sighed, closing his laptop. "Show her in."

Eleanor Mercer walked into the library. Without the board members or attorneys present, she looked surprisingly tired. The sharp, immaculate exterior seemed slightly weathered, faint lines visible around her eyes.

She stood across from Ethan’s desk, silent for a long moment.

"You look just like your father when you sit there like that," Eleanor said quietly, her voice lacking its usual razor edge.

"Father sat here and watched people suffer while he counted balance sheets," Ethan replied coldly. "I don't take that as a compliment."

Eleanor sat down slowly in the leather armchair across from him. "Your father built an empire that kept us safe, Ethan. Do you know what my life was like before I met him? My family lost everything in the nineties. I know what it means to be powerless. Arthur built Mercer Atlantic so nobody could ever push us around again."

"And in the process, he became the bully," Ethan said. "He let men like Richard Sterling run regional operations like sweatshops. He ignored safety reports because fixing them meant lower margins. He traded his soul for shareholder reports."

"He did it for you!" Eleanor shouted, her eyes flashing with a mix of grief and anger. "He did it so you would inherit an untouchable kingdom!"

"I didn't want a kingdom built on corpses, Mother!" Ethan yelled back, standing up. "Look at what that kingdom made out of him! He died alone in this room at midnight with a heart attack because he couldn't stop worrying about stock prices! Is that what you wanted for me?!"

Eleanor flinched as if struck. She stared at Ethan, her mouth open slightly, unable to form a reply.

"I sat under the oak tree on Tuesday," Ethan said softly, his voice dropping into a painful quiet. "And I pretended to sleep because I was so exhausted from living his life that I didn't want to wake up. And a four-year-old child—the daughter of a man we let die—came and checked if my heart was still beating."

Tears glistened in Eleanor’s eyes. She turned her head away, her hands trembling in her lap.

"Richard is going to release the Bridgeport internal investigation files to the press tomorrow morning," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking. "He's going to blame the whole safety cover-up on your father's legacy to clear himself and the board."

Ethan narrowed his eyes. "Richard was the one who signed the non-disclosure agreements with the insurance companies."

"I know," Eleanor said, looking up at her son with a mix of guilt and shame. "I have the original signed documents from eighteen months ago. Your father was already sick... Richard handled all the settlement negotiations himself behind your father's back."

Ethan stared at his mother in shock. "You have the original agreements?"

Eleanor reached into her handbag and pulled out a faded manila envelope, placing it on the desk between them.

"I wanted to protect the family name, Ethan," Eleanor whispered tearfully. "I thought Richard was protecting us. But he’s just protecting himself."

Ethan looked down at the envelope, then back at his mother. A soft, solemn understanding passed between them. The mountain of corporate lies was finally crumbling from within.

"Thank you, Mother," Ethan said gently.

Eleanor stood up slowly, pausing near the door. She looked at Ethan with a soft, watery smile. "She has sweet eyes... the little girl."

Ethan smiled back softly. "She takes after her mother."
