Chapter 4 - SHADOWS OF THE STERLING FAMILY

The restoration of power the following morning brought more than just electricity back to the Whitmore estate; it brought the past.
At 11:00 AM, a long, sleek black Mercedes pulled into the snow-covered driveway. From it stepped Victoria Sterling—Eleanor’s adoptive mother—accompanied by a young woman with sharp, stylized features and a fur-trimmed coat named Julianna Vance, the daughter of Noah’s pediatrician and a prominent Boston socialite.
Claire was downstairs in the play area, helping Noah paint watercolor trees on cheap newsprint, when the front doors swung open.
Victoria Sterling entered like a monarch inspecting a fallen province. She was a woman in her late sixties, impeccably preserved, with platinum hair and eyes as cold and grey as slate. She wore diamonds at her ears that caught the light of the chandeliers.
"Margaret!" Victoria’s voice carried through the grand foyer without effort. "Where is my grandson?"
Ethan stepped out of his study, his face instantly setting into a mask of polite, controlled coldness. "Victoria. I wasn't expecting you today."
"Clearly," Victoria said, her eyes sweeping over Ethan’s casual attire before settling on the play area in the adjoining sunroom. "The weather cleared, and Julianna was kind enough to drive me. We came to check on Noah. Dr. Vance tells us the child's progress has halted completely under this... new arrangement."
Julianna Vance stepped up beside Victoria, offering Ethan a practiced, dazzling smile. "Hello, Ethan. Dad was really concerned after his last consultation. He feels letting a non-certified domestic worker handle Noah’s behavioral therapy is a dangerous mistake."
Claire stood up slowly from the small table, wiping her paint-stained hands on a towel. Noah immediately reached for her skirt, hiding his face behind her knees.
Victoria walked into the sunroom, her leather heels clicking sharply on the hardwood. She stopped two feet from Claire, her eyes examining the girl’s worn sweater and faded jeans with undisguised contempt.
"Is this the girl?" Victoria asked Ethan, not looking at Claire.
"Her name is Claire Bennett," Ethan said, stepping into the room and placing himself subtly between Victoria and Claire. "And she has done more for Noah in two weeks than your doctor did in six months."
Victoria’s chin lifted. "She is a temp from a low-end cleaning agency, Ethan. Eleanor’s trust fund specifically stipulates that any child born to her must be raised according to the highest standards of the Sterling family. Private tutors, certified developmental nurses, proper social exposure. Not... this."
She gestured vaguely at the newsprint and watercolors on the floor.
"Eleanor is gone, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice dangerously quiet. "And Noah is my son."
"He is a Sterling heir!" Victoria snapped, her polite facade cracking to reveal the sharp steel beneath. "He holds twenty percent of Sterling Enterprises through Eleanor’s estate! I will not allow his development to be compromised by an uneducated girl who bribed him with songs!"
Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine, but she didn't look down. She looked directly at Victoria Sterling.
"I didn't bribe him, Mrs. Sterling," Claire said softly, her voice steady. "I gave him comfort. The song was Hannah's. Eleanor's. It's the only thing that makes him feel like his mother hasn't completely disappeared."
Victoria froze. Her pale eyes widened slightly, a flash of genuine shock—and something closely resembling fear—crossing her face before she smothered it with rage.
"How do you know that name?" Victoria hissed, stepping closer to Claire. "Who told you about Hannah?"
"I was there," Claire said quietly. "In Worcester. Before you adopted her."
Victoria turned her head sharply toward Ethan. "Ethan, get this girl out of your house immediately! She is a fraud! She’s researching Eleanor’s past to leverage money out of this family!"
"That's enough, Victoria!" Ethan’s voice boomed through the high ceiling, so loud that even Noah gasped.
Ethan stepped directly in front of Claire, his massive frame blocking Victoria entirely.
"You will respect the people in my house," Ethan said, his eyes blazing with a fury Claire had never seen in him before. "Claire stays. She stays as Noah’s primary caregiver. If you or Dr. Vance have a problem with that, you can take it up with my legal team."
Victoria stared at Ethan, her mouth set in a bitter, thin line. She turned to Julianna, her hand trembling slightly as she adjusted her fur coat.
"You are making a catastrophic mistake, Ethan," Victoria said coldly. "Eleanor’s memory deserves better than this trash. Come, Julianna."
As the heavy front doors slammed shut behind them, the house returned to silence.
Ethan turned around. His chest was heaving slightly, his dark eyes searching Claire’s face.
"Are you alright?" he asked softly.
Claire looked at him, then down at Noah, who was still clutching her skirt. "Why was she so afraid of Hannah's name?" she whispered.
May you like
Ethan didn't answer immediately. He looked toward the snow-covered window, his jaw set, before answering in a low, troubled tone.
"Because Victoria Sterling didn't adopt Eleanor out of love," Ethan said. "She adopted her to cover up a scandal."
