Chapter 8 - THE SICKNESS OF WINTER

Victory in court brought peace to the legal battles, but nature had one more trial in store for the Whitmore home.

In late January, a severe strain of influenza swept through the private preschools of Boston. Despite all precautions, Noah woke up one Tuesday midnight with a burning fever that sent his temperature spiking to 104 degrees.

When the local emergency rooms reported six-hour wait times due to the epidemic, Ethan brought his personal physician to the house.

The nursery became a makeshift medical station.

Noah lay in his small white bed, his face flushed red, his small body shivering under the cool sheets. He thrashed in his sleep, crying out fitfully for his mother.

Claire never left his side.

For three days and three nights, she sat on the edge of his mattress, applying cold compresses to his forehead, holding his small hand, and singing the lullaby whenever his breath grew ragged. She slept in two-hour stretches on the arm chair beside his bed, her eyes dark with fatigue, her own strength draining away.

Ethan stayed with them, abandoning his office entirely. He watched Claire care for his son with a devotion that went far beyond duty, far beyond money, far beyond anything he had ever witnessed.

On the third night, as the fever finally began to break, Ethan sat on the floor beside Claire’s chair.

Noah was sleeping peacefully now, his breathing deep and even, his forehead cool under Claire’s touch.

Claire’s head nodded with exhaustion, her eyes closing as she slipped toward sleep.

Ethan reached out gently, catching her head before it hit the armrest, and guided her down so she was resting against his chest. He wrapped a thick wool blanket around her shoulders, holding her warm body against his.

Claire opened her eyes weakly, looking up at him through the dim light of the nightlamp.

"His fever is down," she whispered softly.

"I know," Ethan murmured, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her face. "You saved him, Claire. Again."

Claire looked up into his dark eyes, seeing no coldness, no distance, no executive authority left in him—only a man who loved deeply and was no longer afraid to show it.

"I love him, Ethan," Claire whispered, her voice raw with fatigue and truth. "I loved his mother, and I love him."

Ethan leaned down, his lips touching hers softly in the quiet nursery.

"I know," Ethan whispered against her lips. "And I love you."
