Chapter 6 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE CANVAS

The library on the ground floor was a vast, cavernous room lined with thousands of leather-bound books, smelling faintly of old paper and beeswax.

When Claire burst through the heavy oak doors, Ethan was still at his desk, his laptop casting a harsh blue glow across his tired face.

"Ethan!" Claire gasped, forgetting all formality. "Look at this!"

She dropped the journal onto his keyboard, pointing at the open page. Ethan read the entry, his eyes scanning the lines once, twice, three times. His face drained of all color.

"My God," Ethan whispered. "Charles Sterling’s secret daughter..."

"The oil painting!" Claire said, turning toward the far wall where a massive, framed landscape of a snowy garden hung above the marble fireplace. "She said it's behind the painting!"

Ethan didn't hesitate. He pulled his suit jacket off, walked over to the fireplace, and grabbed the heavy wooden frame of the nine-foot canvas. With a grunt of effort, he lifted it off its brass hooks and set it carefully against the rug.

Behind the canvas, set flush into the mahogany paneling, was a small, round steel safe.

"It has a combination lock," Ethan said, his teeth set. "Four digits."

Claire looked at the journal in her hands. "Try her birth date. Or the day Noah was born."

"No," Ethan muttered, his fingers moving to the brass dial. "Eleanor used numbers that meant something only to her."

He dialed: 1-1-0-4.

The safe clicked. The heavy steel door swung open smoothly.

Inside lay a thick, ribbon-bound legal folder and an old, yellowed photograph.

Ethan pulled the folder out and opened it on the mantle. Inside were the certified birth records of Eleanor Hart, signed by a county registrar thirty years ago, naming Charles Sterling as her biological father. Alongside them was a holographic codicil to Eleanor’s will—written in her own hand, witnessed by a independent notary public two months before her death.

I, Eleanor Whitmore, hereby explicitly deny Victoria Sterling any custody, guardianship, or administrative control over my son, Noah Whitmore, in the event of my death. I leave my entire share of Sterling Enterprises to Noah, under the sole guardianship of his father, Ethan Whitmore.

Attached to the codicil was a bank receipt detailing a monthly transfer Eleanor had been making in secret for five years to a private account in Worcester.

Claire picked up the yellowed photograph that had been sitting under the documents.

It showed two little girls sitting on a wooden bench outside an old brick building. One was Eleanor—pale, blond, smiling softly. The other was a smaller girl with dark hair, wearing a oversized coat, holding a ragged stuffed rabbit.

On the back of the photo, written in faded ink, were words that made tears flood Claire’s eyes:

Hannah & Claire. Sisters forever.

Ethan looked over her shoulder at the photograph. He saw the little girl holding the exact same rabbit that Noah held every night—the rabbit Eleanor had preserved and passed down to her son.

Ethan turned to Claire, his dark eyes filled with an emotion so intense it seemed to vibrate through the quiet library.

"She didn't forget you, Claire," Ethan whispered, his voice thick. "She brought her whole life back to you."

Claire pressed the photograph against her chest and wept—quiet, cleansing tears that washed away twenty years of feeling abandoned in the cold corners of the world.

Ethan stepped closer, his arms moving around her naturally, pulling her against his chest. For the first time, he didn't hold back. He held her tightly, resting his chin against her hair, while the snow beat harmlessly against the high library windows.
