Chapter 3 - The Falling Mask

The entire grand ballroom turned into an arena of shock. The $68 million figure glinted under the crystal chandeliers, throwing a harsh, cold light over Christopher Albright’s pale face.
On the screen behind Luke, financial documents began auto-scrolling. They were not mere accusations; they were pristine, legally verified audit trail logs from top-tier international banking networks. Bank accounts located in the Cayman Islands, Liechtenstein, and Zurich were displayed line by line, all showing massive capital transfers originating from Vivian Albright’s private trust funds directly into shell companies controlled by Brenda Vance and Christopher.
"Is that... embezzlement?" a prominent real estate mogul whispered loud enough for the microphone nearby to catch.
"Look at the signatures!" another voice called out. "They forged her authorization!"
Brenda stood rooted to the spot, her eyes wide with terror. The champagne dress, once a symbol of her grand triumph, now felt like a heavy, suffocating iron cage. She tried to step backward, to slip toward the curtained exit behind the VIP tables, but the flashbulbs of dozens of press photographers blinded her path.
"Turn it off! Turn off the screen!" Christopher screamed at the event organizers, his composure entirely shattered. He rushed the stage stairs, reaching out to grab Luke’s arm. "You ungrateful brat! Do you have any idea what you've done? You're destroying this family!"
Luke sidestepped his father's hand with cold, athletic precision. He looked down at Christopher not with anger, but with profound disappointment.
"You destroyed this family two years ago, Christopher," Luke said, dropping the title 'Father' completely. "My mother gave you her trust, her dignity, and her father’s legacy. You gave her betrayal, theft, and poison."
At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom opened once again. This time, it wasn't a guest who entered.
Four uniformed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, flanked by three suit-clad federal agents from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), walked down the central red carpet with slow, unyielding authority.
The head detective pulled out a dark leather badge binder. "Christopher Albright? Brenda Vance?"
Christopher turned around, his hands trembling violently. "Officers, this is a family misunderstanding! My son has hacked into our corporate presentation—"
"Mr. Albright, we are not here because of a presentation," the lead detective interrupted, his voice echoing across the quieted room. "We have an active warrant issued by the Los Angeles Superior Court regarding the deliberate administration of a controlled substance to Mrs. Vivian Albright, as well as an injunction freezing all assets connected to Albright Global Holdings."
"What?" Brenda shrieked, her voice high and panicked. She clutched my grandmother's bracelet. "No! I didn't do anything! It was Christopher! He told me to—"
"Shut up, Brenda!" Christopher roared, turning on her with a vicious glare that horrified everyone present. "Shut your mouth!"
"Don't tell me to shut up!" Brenda screamed back, her polished high-society persona crumbling into frantic hysteria. "You promised me she'd be out of the picture! You said the doctor signed off on the medical power of attorney! You said we owned the board!"
The room gasped in collective horror. The live stream feed, which had already reached over two million viewers online, captured every single word of her confession.
From the quiet comfort of my master bedroom in Beverly Hills, I watched the television screen. The bitter taste in my mouth seemed to vanish, replaced by the sharp, electric surge of returning vitality. I stood up from my bed. My legs were still slightly weak, but my resolve was solid iron.
Mrs. Higgins handed me a warm coat and my practical leather boots.
"Where are you going, Mrs. Albright?" she asked gently, tears of relief glinting in her old eyes.

I looked at the reflection in the mirror. I was no longer the quiet, grieving widow-in-waiting who allowed her husband's mistress to walk over her home. I pulled my hair back into a sleek, firm ponytail.
"I'm going to take back what belongs to me," I replied.
