Chapter 4 - The 68-Million-Dollar File

By the time my black town car arrived at the Grand Horizon Hotel, the front driveway was a chaos of flashing red and blue police lights, news vans, and bewildered guests filtering out into the cool evening air.

Reporters swarmed the entrance, but two private security guards hired by Luke cleared a path for me. When I walked through the double doors into the grand lobby, the room went dead silent.

I was wearing simple black trousers and a charcoal trench coat—a sharp contrast to the glittery gowns and tuxedos surrounding me. But as I walked, my head held high, every eye in the lobby shifted to me.

There, near the central fountain, Christopher and Brenda were being escorted in handcuffs toward separate police cruisers. Brenda was crying hysterically, her expensive makeup running down her face, the hem of my champagne silk gown dragged through the dirt on the pavement.

When Christopher saw me walk past the glass doors, his eyes widened in sheer disbelief.

"Vivian!" he yelled, straining against the officer holding his wrist. "Vivian, please! Talk to them! Tell them this is a mistake! You know I would never hurt you! It was all Brenda! She manipulated me!"

Brenda snapped her head toward him, her face distorted with rage. "You lying bastard! You were the one who bought the sedatives online! You made me drop them in her soup!"

"Silence! Both of you!" the arresting officer barked, shoving Christopher into the back seat of the police cruiser.

I stopped at the glass doors and looked at Christopher through the window. For fifteen years, I had loved this man. I had helped him build his confidence when he was just a mid-level analyst. I had used my father's extensive political and financial network to elevate him to CEO. And he had repaid me by trying to erase my existence.

I didn't utter a single curse. I didn't raise my voice. I simply raised my hand, tapped on the glass window, and looked him dead in the eye.

"The company was never yours, Christopher," I said softly, knowing he could read my lips. "It was always mine."

Luke stepped up beside me, handing me a thick leather binder stamped with the official seal of the California State Treasury.

"This is the master file, Mom," Luke said. "Every illegal transfer, every offshore shell company, every wire transfer Christopher made using your forged signature over the last twenty-four months. It’s all here."

"How long have you been gathering this, Luke?" I asked, looking at my eighteen-year-old son with deep pride and awe.

"Since the day I saw her wearing your ring at the coffee shop downtown," Luke answered quietly. "A year ago. I realized then that defense wasn't enough. We had to prepare a complete, flawless counter-strike."

I opened the file. The $68 million figure was just the tip of the iceberg. The file contained evidence that Christopher had systematically tried to drain my family estate to cover massive personal gambling debts in Macau and unauthorized corporate investments that had gone terribly wrong. Brenda wasn't just his mistress; she was his financial accomplice, utilizing her position as my assistant to steal identity documents, sign legal waivers, and slowly poison my physical health so I would be unfit to contest their corporate takeover in court.

"They thought you were weak because you were kind," Luke said, putting a hand on my shoulder. "They forgot who built the foundation they were standing on."

I closed the file with a decisive snap. "Call our legal counsel. Tell them to file for immediate divorce, an emergency freeze on all corporate assets, and a petition for my immediate reinstatement as Chairwoman of the Board."

"Already done, Mom," Luke smiled faintly. "The board meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine."
