Chapter 2 - Unraveling the Vault

"Mr. Weston Sutherland?" the lead officer asked, holding up a badge. "We’re here regarding an urgent freeze order issued on account ending in 4092, as well as a preliminary inquiry into off-book transactions linked to Sutherland Fine Goods."
Weston froze, his hands dropping to his sides. "Officer, this is a private family matter. My wife is just upset—"
"I am not just his wife," I interrupted, standing tall beside the officers. "I am the registered legal treasurer of the enterprise, and as of 8:00 AM today, I have formally revoked my liability guarantee."
Marguerite gasped, clutching her gold necklace. "You little snake! You’re trying to ruin my birthday! Weston, throw her out! Call our lawyer!"
"Your lawyer won't answer, Marguerite," I said evenly. "Because Lena Hart sent him forty-seven pages of bank transfers two hours ago. The same transfers you signed off on using my forged signature to pay for your personal country club memberships, luxury leases, and overseas vacations."
Weston looked between me and the police, the reality finally cracking through his arrogant facade. "Brynn... please. We can talk about this. You don't have to do this here, today."
"You told me last night that I live in this house because you allow it," I whispered, stepping close enough that only he could hear me. "You forgot one detail, Weston. The house deed was put in my name as tax collateral during your father’s bankruptcy five years ago. You don't own this house. I do."
The silence in the grand entrance hall was deafening.

The caterers finished setting down the final warmers, completely ignoring the tension, and handed me the final sign-off sheet. I signed it with a flourish, handed the driver a tip, and turned back to my husband and mother-in-law.
"The guests will be arriving soon," I said softly, picking up my coat. "Make sure the roast beef stays warm. You’re going to need your strength for the deposition on Monday."
