Chapter 4 - Public Execution

From the edge of the lawn, hidden behind the high hedge, I watched the disaster unfold.
The front doors of the estate were wide open. Through the large glass windows of the dining room, guests were surrounding the elaborate buffet table, plates filled with the twenty expensive dishes I had ordered.
Suddenly, two men in sharp grey suits walked into the main dining room accompanied by a court process server. Marguerite’s sharp voice carried out into the courtyard.
"What is the meaning of this?! This is a private residence! It is my fifty-fifth birthday!"
"Mrs. Sutherland," the courier said loudly enough for half the room to hear, "you are being formally served with a temporary restraining order and asset preservation injunction regarding Sutherland Enterprises. All accounts associated with this address have been placed under federal administrative hold."
Gasps echoed through the dining hall. Wine glasses froze mid-air.
Weston rushed forward, grabbing the papers from the courier’s hand. "This is a mistake! My wife filed a fraudulent report! She's mentally unstable!"
"Your wife provided sworn bank affidavits verified by a forensic accounting firm, Mr. Sutherland," the investigator replied calmly. "Furthermore, this property has an active eviction lien attached to it, filed by the primary title holder, Brynn Sutherland."
Marguerite turned pale, looking around at her wealthy friends, who were already whispering behind their hands and backing away toward the exit.
"Eviction?" Marguerite gasped, her voice cracking. "This is my son's home!"

"Not anymore," I said, stepping into the grand doorway, dressed in a sharp black suit, flanked by my legal counsel.
The room fell completely silent. All eyes turned from the catered food to me.
