Chapter 3 - Blood and Steel

News of the dispute between Ethan Marlowe and his wife spread through Manhattan's tech and venture capital circles like wildfire.
By Monday afternoon, Marlowe Technologies' stock value had dropped eight percent as rumors leaked that the company’s core IP was facing a catastrophic legal challenge. Major investors began calling Ethan's office every five minutes, demanding answers.
Meanwhile, Claire sat in the elegant corner room of the Mount Sinai Women’s Health Center.
The room was quiet, lit by soft afternoon sunlight. Her doctor, Dr. Eleanor Reyes, moved the ultrasound wand gently across Claire’s growing bump, applying warm gel.
On the high-definition monitor mounted on the wall, three distinct, tiny heartbeats pulsed in steady unison: thump-thump-thump, thump-thump-thump.
Claire stared at the screen, her eyes glistening with warm tears. For the first time since the night at the Halston, the icy armor around her heart melted.
"They are growing perfectly, Claire," Dr. Reyes said, pointing to the monitor. "Baby A, Baby B, and Baby C are all measuring right on track for fourteen weeks. Strong heartbeats, good movement."
"Are they..." Claire whispered, her voice tight with emotion. "Are they healthy?"
"Extremely healthy," Dr. Reyes smiled. "You're doing a fantastic job keeping your stress levels down. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it."
"I'm cutting away the toxins in my life," Claire said softly, touching the glass of the screen where the three little shapes rested.
"Well, it's working," Dr. Reyes said. "Now, remember: carrying triplets means we need to be extremely vigilant. By week twenty-eight, you will likely need bed rest. You need to make sure your support system is solid."
"My support system is unbreakable," Claire said firmly.
When Claire left the clinic, her phone buzzed. It was an unknown number, but she recognized the area code. She answered.
"Claire."
It was her father, Arthur Vance. He hadn't called her in over two years—not since he had divorced Claire’s mother and taken her sister Vanessa’s side in every family dispute.
"Hello, Arthur," Claire said, stepping into the backseat of her private car.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Arthur shouted into the phone, his voice shaking with fury. "Vanessa called me crying from her apartment! She has a court date for grand larceny! You’re putting your own blood in handcuffs over a damn piece of glass?!"
"That 'piece of glass' belonged to my mother," Claire replied, her voice dropping into a register of chilling calm. "The mother you abandoned. And Vanessa stole it from my safe while sleeping with my husband."
"Ethan is trying to save his company!" Arthur barked. "He made a mistake! Men make mistakes! But you are destroying this family’s reputation! You drop the charges against Vanessa immediately, or I swear to God, Claire, I will disinherit you completely!"
Claire let out a soft, melodic laugh that caught her father entirely off guard.
"Disinherit me?" Claire asked. "Arthur, you haven't owned anything worth inheriting since mother’s family trust bailed out your failed real estate firm in 2018. You live on an allowance provided by a company I built."
"You arrogant little—"
"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," Claire interrupted, her tone sharp enough to cut glass. "Vanessa chose to stand with Ethan. You chose to stand with Vanessa. So let me give you a fair warning: when Marlowe Technologies collapses, take care that you don't fall with it. Because when my children are born, none of you will ever be allowed within ten miles of them."
She hung up the phone before he could reply and immediately blocked his number.

She looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline. The sky was clearing, revealing a brilliant, pale blue horizon.
"Three heartbeats," she whispered to herself. "And one mother who will burn the world to protect them."
