Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke

The confrontation took place in the grand conference room of Vance & Associates on the fifty-fifth floor of One World Trade Center.
Ethan arrived accompanied by Sterling and three junior attorneys. He looked exhausted, his suit hanging slightly loose on his shoulders.
Claire walked into the room ten minutes later.
She wore an elegant, tailored emerald-green maternity dress that highlighted her modest bump at sixteen weeks. Her dark hair was styled smoothly, and around her neck hung her mother’s diamond necklace—returned to her after Vanessa’s legal team had surrendered it to avoid immediate arrest.
Beside her sat Julian Vance, looking like an old lion ready for a hunt.
Ethan’s eyes lingered on the diamond necklace, then shifted down to Claire’s stomach. A strange ache gripped his chest. "Claire," he said softly. "You look... healthy."
"I am extremely healthy, Ethan," Claire replied, sitting down across from him. "Let's keep this businesslike. We both have limited time."
Sterling cleared his throat and slid a fifty-page document across the glass table.
"Mrs. Marlowe," Sterling began, "we are prepared to make an unprecedented offer to settle all outstanding corporate and matrimonial disputes. Mr. Marlowe is willing to transfer fifty-one percent of all class-A voting shares of Marlowe Technologies into the 'Marlowe Triplets Irrevocable Trust.' You will serve as the sole trustee until the children reach the age of twenty-five. In exchange, Aegis Holdings grants a permanent, non-revocable license for Nexus-9 to Marlowe Technologies."
Ethan looked directly at Claire, his eyes pleading. "Claire, please. This gives our children everything. They will be the heirs to an empire before they are even born. You will control the board. I am giving you total control."
Claire did not touch the paper. She looked at Julian, who gave her a subtle, knowing nod.
Then, Claire looked at Ethan.
"You really don't see it, do you?" Claire asked softly.
Ethan blinked. "See what?"
"You think you are making a generous sacrifice by giving fifty-one percent to our children," Claire said, her voice dripping with quiet disdain. "You think you are 'gifting' them an empire. But Ethan... Marlowe Technologies is currently facing forty-two million dollars in debt from your failed European expansion, which you hid from the board last quarter."
Ethan’s face went dead white. Sterling froze, looking sideways at his client.
"How... how do you know about that?" Ethan stammered.
"Because as the seventy-five percent owner of Aegis Holdings, I initiated a forensic financial audit two weeks ago," Claire said smoothly. "You took out high-yield predatory loans from a private equity firm in Miami to cover your operational cash flow deficits because you couldn't pay the Nexus-9 license fees. If I accept fifty-one percent of your company today, my children’s trust becomes liable for your fraudulent corporate debt."
"I... I was going to pay that back once the new contracts signed!" Ethan gasped.
"You lied to your board, you lied to your investors, and now you tried to dump a sinking, debt-ridden corporate ship onto your unborn babies," Claire said, her voice rising into a sharp, terrifying crescendo.
She stood up, leaning both hands on the table, her emerald dress framing her figure with absolute authority.
"I don't want fifty-one percent of your crumbling company, Ethan," Claire declared. "I am calling the license default today. As of five o'clock this afternoon, Aegis Holdings terminates the Nexus-9 license permanently. And tomorrow morning, I am launching Aegis Logistics Systems."
Ethan stood up so fast his chair fell backward. "You can't do that! That destroys Marlowe Technologies!"
"No, Ethan," Claire said, pulling her designer handbag over her shoulder. "You destroyed Marlowe Technologies the night you brought my sister to the Halston Hotel and put a price tag on my children's future."
She turned and walked toward the double doors.
"Claire! Wait!" Ethan yelled, taking a step forward.

Julian Vance stood up, stepping between Ethan and Claire. The old attorney leaned in close to Ethan's face, his eyes cold as glacial ice.
"Don't follow her, Ethan," Julian warned softly. "Your board of directors has already been notified of the debt fraud. I suggest you retain a criminal defense attorney. You're going to need one."
