Chapter 13 - Uninvited Guests

The Grand Foyer of the museum was a sea of black ties, silk gowns, and clinking champagne flutes. Giant floral arrangements hung from the archways, and light bounced off the marble floors. Eleanor Vance stood near the podium, wearing a crimson satin dress and a multi-carat diamond necklace, smiling regally as wealthy donors congratulated her on another successful year for the Vance Arts Foundation.
Standing a few feet away, looking pale and disheveled despite his tailored tuxedo, was Grant. He downed his third glass of scotch, his eyes darting anxiously toward the entrance.
"Pull yourself together, Grant," Eleanor hissed under her breath, not breaking her polished smile for the photographer taking their picture. "You look like a guilty schoolboy."
"She hasn't responded to the text, Mother," Grant muttered, sweating slightly. "What if Cho got an injunction? What if—"
"Leah is an emotional weakling," Eleanor sneered quietly. "She’s lying in a hospital bed weeping over her precious little bastard. She doesn't have the stomach for a public fight. By midnight, we will have auctioned her early folios for three million dollars, which will cover your margin deficit until the offshore accounts clear."
"Are you quite sure about that, Eleanor?"
A clear, resonant voice echoed across the quiet hush that had suddenly fallen over the foyer.
Eleanor froze. Grant nearly dropped his glass.
Walking through the grand archway was Leah. She was breathtaking. She wore a floor-length, sapphire-blue velvet gown that accentuated the beautiful curve of her pregnancy. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant updo, and her eyes burned with unquestionable authority.
Flanking her were Daniel Cho, looking impeccably sharp in a midnight-blue tuxedo, Marcus Vance carrying a thick leather briefcase, and three uniformed officers from the New York Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division.
The room went dead silent. Guests parted like the Red Sea as Leah strolled calmly toward the podium.
"Leah?" Grant stammered, stepping back, his face draining of color. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be—"
"In a hospital, terrified of your pathetic threats?" Leah interrupted, her voice carrying easily through the cavernous marble hall. "I’m afraid you miscalculated, Grant. Just like you miscalculated when you stole my art."
"Security!" Eleanor shrieked, her royal composure shattering in an instant. "Security, remove these trespassers immediately! This is a private charity event!"
"Actually, Mrs. Vance," Daniel stepped forward, drawing an official court document from his inner pocket and handing it directly to the lead detective beside him, "this event is now a crime scene."
The lead detective stepped up to the podium, looking down at the framed watercolor paintings displayed on velvet easels behind Eleanor. "Eleanor Vance, Grant Vance, you are under investigation for grand larceny, intellectual property theft, and wire fraud. We have a federal warrant to seize these paintings and all transaction records associated with the Vance Arts Foundation."
Gasps erupted through the crowd. Cell phones flew into the air as wealthy donors recorded the entire spectacle.
"This is ridiculous! This is an outrage!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking. "These paintings belong to my family’s estate!"
"They belong to me," Leah said calmly, stepping directly in front of Eleanor. "I painted every single one of those canvases in the attic of your mansion while you told me I was useless. Every stroke, every drop of pigment, bears my signature—hidden under the paint layer in infrared ink."
Leah turned to the crowd, looking at the city’s most influential patrons.
"Eleanor Vance didn't discover a lost master," Leah declared, her voice filled with triumph. "She robbed her daughter-in-law. And Grant Vance tried to threaten my unborn child to keep me quiet."
Grant looked around wildly as his friends and investors stared at him with utter disgust. "Leah... please... we can work this out..." he stammered, reaching out a trembling hand.
"Don't touch her," Daniel said, stepping smoothly between Grant and Leah, his presence cold and imposing. "The only place you're going to work this out is in a federal courtroom, Mr. Vance."
As the police officers escorted Eleanor and Grant out through the side exit amidst the flashing cameras of the press, Leah stood in the middle of the grand foyer. She took a deep breath, feeling the heavy burden of five years of abuse lift off her shoulders forever.

Daniel turned to her, his eyes filled with warmth and pride. "How do you feel?"
Leah smiled, taking his arm. "I feel like eating a bagel."
