Chapter 18 - A Canvas of Three

Spring returned to Brooklyn Heights with a explosion of cherry blossoms and warm, balmy breezes.

The studio was no longer just an art space; it was a sanctuary of life. The sound of soft lullabies mixed with the rustle of paintbrush bristles. A wooden crib, hand-carved by Uncle Richard with intricate motifs of leaves and waves, sat near the large industrial windows.

Elias was now three months old—a happy, chubby baby who loved watching the light bounce off his mother’s oil paintings.

Leah stood at her easel, holding three-month-old Elias in a front carrier, gently guiding his tiny hand as she dipped a sponge in soft yellow paint and dabbed it onto a large new canvas.

"See that, Elias?" Leah whispered, kissing his soft cheek. "That’s the morning sun."

The studio door unlocked, and Daniel walked in, wearing jeans and a simple linen shirt, carrying a basket of fresh strawberries and bread from the greenmarket. He walked straight over to them, wrapping his arms around Leah’s waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder, kissing Elias’s forehead.

"How’s the master artist and her apprentice doing today?" Daniel asked, his voice full of warmth.

"We’re painting the garden," Leah smiled, leaning back against his sturdy chest. "And we’re waiting for papa to make coffee."

"Papa is at your service," Daniel laughed, kissing her neck softly.

Uncle Richard walked in a moment later, holding a morning newspaper. "Well, Leah, it seems your gallery opening next month in Chelsea is officially sold out. The New York Times called you 'the most compelling voice in contemporary American impressionism.'"

Leah looked at the newspaper, then at her painting, and finally at Daniel and Richard. A few years ago, she would have sought validation in critical acclaim. Now, she realized that the true masterpiece wasn't framed on a gallery wall—it was the life she had reclaimed.

"Let them write what they want," Leah said softly, taking Daniel’s hand. "The real story is right here in this room."
