Chapter 19 - The Legacy of Love

A year later.

The summer sun shone brightly over a private coastal cottage in Montauk, Long Island—a home Leah and Daniel had bought together. The cottage stood on a grassy cliff overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by wild roses and salt air.

It was Elias’s first birthday.

Streamers and paper lanterns hung from the wooden porch, fluttering in the ocean breeze. Friends, colleagues, Marcus Vance, and neighborly families gathered on the lawn, celebrating with laughter, music, and cake.

Elias, now a toddling, energetic one-year-old with Daniel’s dark eyes and Leah’s mischievous smile, was happily smashing a small birthday cupcake on a picnic blanket, surrounded by wrapping paper.

Uncle Richard sat on a bench nearby, watching the scene with a peaceful, contented smile. Leah walked over and sat beside him, resting her head on her uncle’s shoulder.

"Thank you, Richard," Leah whispered softly. "For coming to get me that day in Westchester. For believing in me when I didn't believe in myself."

Richard put a arm around her, his eyes glistening with happy tears. "You saved yourself, Leah. I just held the flashlight while you found the door. Your mother is looking down on this garden today, seeing you loved, seeing Elias thrive... and she’s finally at peace."

Across the lawn, Daniel was playing chase with Elias, making goofy sounds that made the little boy shriek with joyful laughter. Daniel lifted Elias high into the air, spinning him around against the backdrop of the blue sky and open ocean.

Leah stood up and walked toward them, her heart overflowing with a quiet, boundless gratitude.

When Daniel saw her coming, he lowered Elias onto his hip and reached out his free hand to draw Leah close.

"Happy birthday to our boy," Daniel whispered, kissing Leah’s lips deeply and tenderly under the warm afternoon sun.

"Happy birthday to our home," Leah replied softly.
