Chapter 10 - The Shoreline

One year later.
The morning sun rose bright and golden over the waters of St. Michaels.
On the manicured green lawn overlooking the harbor behind the historic maritime museum, fifty local friends, boatbuilders, shopkeepers, and neighbors sat in white wooden chairs under an open sky filled with gliding seagulls.
Violins played a sweet, gentle melody.
Standing at the front of the lawn, under a simple wooden archway decorated with white hydrangeas and drift oak, stood Thomas Hale. He wore a crisp dark grey suit, a white shirt, and a simple silver tie. His face was lit with an intense, quiet joy as he looked down the aisle.
Audrey walked down the aisle alone.
She did not need a father to give her away. She did not need an empire to legitimize her. She walked with her head held high, wearing a breathtaking, simple ivory silk dress that moved like water around her feet. She held a bouquet of white wildflowers and sea lavender. Her hair was down, falling in soft waves over her shoulders, lit golden by the morning sun.
When she reached Thomas, he stepped forward, taking both of her hands in his.
His hands were warm, strong, and steady.
The local magistrate smiled at them both. "We are gathered here today in the presence of friends and community to unite Audrey and Thomas in marriage..."
As the vows were spoken, Audrey looked into Thomas’s eyes.
There were no contracts on the table. There were no property trusts in escrow. There were no hidden motives, no fake pregnancies, no old ghosts lurking in the shadows of the past.
There was only a man who loved her for who she was, and a woman who had finally found the courage to love without fear.
"I give you my promise," Thomas whispered, sliding a simple, elegant band of hammered gold onto her finger. "To stand by you in every storm, to build a home with you in every calm, and to love you for all the days of my life."
Audrey smiled, tears of pure joy flowing freely down her cheeks as she slid a matching gold band onto his finger.
"I give you my heart, Thomas," Audrey whispered, her voice clear and resonant in the quiet morning air. "Without reservation, without fear, and without end."
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the magistrate declared with a warm smile. "Thomas, you may kiss your bride."
Thomas pulled Audrey gently into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her under the bright Maryland sky. The crowd erupted into warm, joyful applause, the boat horns in the harbor sounding a merry, triumphant chorus across the water.
Audrey pulled back, looking into her husband's smiling face, then turned to look out at the vast, shining expanse of the bay.

The rain was gone. The storm had passed.
And standing on the shoreline of her new life, Audrey Bellamy took her husband's hand and walked forward into the bright, beautiful sunshine.
