Chapter 9 - The Last Letter

Two months later.

Summer had arrived in full bloom. The bookstore was thriving, filled with tourists and locals alike.

On a warm Thursday afternoon, Audrey was sorting mail in the back office when Arthur Vance called her private mobile line.

"Audrey," Arthur’s voice sounded older, softer over the line.

"Hello, Arthur," Audrey said, leaning back in her wooden desk chair. "How are things in New York?"

"Quiet," Arthur said. "I’m calling because... I thought you should know. The trial for Julian Mercer concluded yesterday."

Audrey remained silent, waiting.

"He pled guilty to two counts of federal wire fraud and securities violation," Arthur reported. "He was sentenced to seven years at a federal correctional facility in Pennsylvania. His license to practice law and manage securities has been permanently revoked."

Audrey took a slow, deep breath. "And Lenora?"

"She moved to a small town in Ohio," Arthur said. "She’s working at a local dry cleaner. She lives alone. She tried to send a letter to the estate last month, but under the terms of the settlement agreement, I returned it unopened."

"Good," Audrey said softly. "Leave it unopened."

"Audrey," Arthur said, his voice softening with genuine affection. "Are you happy?"

Audrey looked out the window of her back office. Through the glass, she could see Thomas standing on the dock near the museum, helping an elderly couple onto a restored wooden launch, smiling and waving as they pushed off into the water.

"Yes, Arthur," Audrey said, tears of gratitude touching her eyes. "I am very happy."

"Then my job is done," the old lawyer said warmly. "Take care of yourself, Audrey."

"Goodbye, Arthur."

She hung up the phone. She picked up the small stack of unopened mail on her desk, walked to the small paper shredder in the corner, and dropped the legal reports straight into the blades without reading another word.

The past was finally, completely dead.
