Chapter 4 - The Edge of the Blade

The sun rose on Friday morning in a blaze of cold, white light.

By nine o'clock, the main parlor of the Greenwich estate had been set up for the small private ceremony. A justice of the peace sat near the grand marble fireplace, reviewing the marriage license. Two corporate lawyers from Vance & Associates stood near the French doors, holding the final execution folders for the estate.

Julian stood by the window, adjusting his silk tie in the reflection of the glass. He wore a navy suit, his hair swept back, a confident, victorious smile gracing his features.

He looked around the room, taking in the crystal chandeliers, the oil paintings, the vast manicured grounds outside.

It’s done, Julian thought, his pulse hammering with excitement. By noon, I’m married to the Bellamy heir. By next month, the conservatorship breaks. We sell Oakridge, clear the debts, and I take my seat on the board.

The heavy double doors of the parlor clicked open.

Lenora stepped into the room.

Julian turned, his smile widening—until he saw his mother’s face.

Lenora looked like she had aged ten years overnight. Dark purple circles shadowed her eyes. Her skin was gray, her hands trembling violently as she clutched a leather handbag against her coat.

"Mom?" Julian said, taking a step toward her, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What's wrong with you? Why aren't you dressed? The magistrate is already here."

Lenora looked at her son—at his handsome face, his proud posture, his bright blue eyes—and a deep, agonizing sob caught in her throat.

"Julian..." Lenora whispered, her voice trembling. "We have to leave. Now."

Julian paused, frowning sharply. "What are you talking about?"

Lenora rushed forward, grabbing his suit lapels with frantic strength, pulling him toward the door. "We have to go! Right now! Leave the car, leave the bags, just walk out the front gate with me! Please, Julian! If you love me, come with me now!"

Julian pulled her hands off his suit with an annoyed, sharp shove. "Mom, stop it! Are you out of your mind?! The wedding is in ten minutes!"

"There is no wedding!" Lenora cried out, her voice rising into a panicked shriek. "She knows, Julian! She knows everything!"

Julian’s face went completely still. "Knows what?"

Before Lenora could answer, the side door near the fireplace opened.

Audrey stepped into the parlor.

She was not wearing a bridal dress. She wore a tailored black wool suit, high heels, and a single strand of pearls around her neck. Her hair was pulled back into a slick, elegant knot. She looked less like a bride and more like a prosecutor walking into a courtroom.

Behind her walked Arthur Vance, holding a thick Manila folder.

"Good morning, Julian," Audrey said smoothly, her voice cutting through the tense air of the parlor like a cold knife.

Julian looked from Audrey’s black suit to his mother’s terrified face, his mind racing, trying to regain control of the room. "Audrey... what is this? Why aren't you in your dress? Where is the dress?"

"There is no dress, Julian," Audrey said, walking to the long table in the center of the room and setting her hands flat on the polished wood. "And there is no magistrate's signature coming today."

Julian took a step forward, his fists clenching. "What the hell are you playing at, Audrey? Is this a joke? Because of what happened at the pool? I signed your waiver! I humbled myself! We have a baby on the way!"

Audrey looked at him with a slow, icy smile that sent a shiver straight down Julian’s spine.

"There is no baby, Julian."

Julian froze. "What?"

"I was never pregnant," Audrey said calmly. "I bought a fake medical report from a private clinic in Queens for five hundred dollars. I used it to see how fast you would run back to me once you thought you had a biological claim on the Bellamy fortune."

Julian’s breath stopped. His jaw dropped, his face turning from flush red to a sickly, pale chalk. "You... you lied to me?"

"Just like you lied when you told me you cared about me," Audrey replied, her eyes unblinking. "Just like your mother lied for twenty-eight years."

Julian turned violently toward Lenora. "Mom! What is she talking about?!"

Lenora covered her face with her hands, sinking onto the nearby sofa, weeping uncontrollably. "Julian... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."

May you like

Audrey signaled to Arthur Vance. The elderly lawyer stepped forward, opened the Manila folder, and pulled out a certified genetic analysis report from the Connecticut State Forensics Laboratory.

"Julian," Audrey said, her voice dropping into a register of total, devastating authority. "Meet your biological sister."
