Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Pantry

By 3:00 AM, the estate had grown deathly quiet, save for the patter of freezing rain against the high basement windows. Lena had refused to go up to her small staff quarters on the third floor, preferring to sleep sitting upright in a wooden chair beside her prep table, a heavy wool blanket draped over her shoulders.

A faint, metallic click echoed down the hallway.

Lena’s eyes snapped open. Adrenaline surged through her veins, instantly driving away the heavy fog of exhaustion.

She didn't move. She kept her breathing slow and even, her eyes fixed on the narrow crack beneath the kitchen door.

Footsteps. Soft, deliberate, trying desperately to make no sound on the polished linoleum floor.

The door handle turned, squeaking ever so slightly.

A dark figure slipped into the room, moving like a ghost toward the main refrigeration unit and the dry-goods pantry where the rare imported spices were locked away.

Lena slipped out of her chair, her soft-soled kitchen clogs making zero noise as she crept behind a large stainless-steel mobile rack filled with baking sheets.

The intruder struck a small match, the tiny flame illuminating a face in the dim pantry doorway.

It wasn't Nathan.

It wasn't Everett.

It was Marco, the junior sous-chef, his hands trembling violently as he fumbled with a small amber bottle hidden deep inside his apron pocket.

Marco reached up, grabbing a jar of dried French lavender from the top shelf, unscrewing the lid, and tipping a dark, viscous liquid from the amber bottle directly into the spice blend, mixing it thoroughly with a silver spoon.

He's resetting the evidence, Lena realized with a jolt of horror. He’s contaminating the rest of the spices so my tests will show widespread contamination instead of a targeted dose.

Lena didn't think. She acted.

"Put the spoon down, Marco."

The junior sous-chef gasped, dropping the silver spoon as he spun around, his eyes wild and terrified in the dark.

"L-Lena!" Marco stammered, backing up against the shelves until a bag of flour wobbled precariously above him. "What are you... what are you doing awake?"

"I could ask you the same thing," Lena said, stepping out from behind the rack, her posture rigid, her voice dropping into a dangerous, commanding tone that surprised even herself. "Adding a secondary batch of oleander extract to the lavender jar won't save you, Marco. The chemical signature of fresh leaf extract versus dried botanical residue is completely different on a gas chromatography mass spectrometer. Dr. Reed is already running the samples from the first plate."

Marco’s face drained of all color. The desperate, terrified kid facade vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened panic.

"You shouldn't have been poking around, you fat, arrogant bitch," Marco hissed, his hand darting into his apron pocket.

Before Lena could react, Marco pulled out a heavy chef’s steel sharpening steel, lunging forward with desperate fury.

Lena sidestepped with surprising agility, using her weight and momentum to slam a heavy plastic flour bin directly into Marco’s shins. The young sous-chef yelped, tripping over his own feet and crashing hard against the tile floor, sending spice jars cascading down around him in a shattering rain of glass.

Before Marco could scramble back to his feet, the kitchen doors burst open with a deafening crash.

Four armed guards rushed in, led by Vincent Calder himself, who was still fully dressed in his charcoal suit, his tie loosened slightly at the collar.

"Hold him," Vincent commanded.

Two guards hauled Marco off the floor in seconds, pinning his arms behind his back while a third kicked the sharpening steel away across the room.

Vincent stepped over the broken glass, his cold, lethal gaze fixed entirely on the trembling sous-chef.

"Mr. Calder! Please! I didn't mean to—it wasn't my idea!" Marco wept hysterically, collapsing onto his knees as the guards held him up. "Nathan! Mr. Nathan paid me! He said if I added the extract to your plate, you’d be incapacitated for three days and he could take over the board vote on the shipping contracts!"

The room went dead silent.

Vincent didn't flinch. But the look in his eyes was darker and more terrifying than anything Lena had ever witnessed.

He slowly turned his head to look at Lena, his expression unreadable.

The traitor wasn't a random kitchen hand.

It was his own blood.
