Chapter 4 - Family Business

The sun was just beginning to peek over the jagged tree line of Bellweather County, casting a cold, gray light across the grand library of the Calder estate.

A single leather armchair sat in the center of the room. Bound securely to it with heavy zip-ties was Marco, whimpering softly as he stared at the floor. Standing near the massive stone fireplace was Nathan Calder, holding a glass of scotch, his expression a mask of arrogant disdain.

"This is completely absurd, Vincent," Nathan said, swirling the amber liquid in his glass without looking at the men standing near the door. "You’re dragging a terrified kitchen kid in here in the middle of the night based on the hysterical ramblings of a pastry chef who watches too many crime dramas."

Vincent stood by the window, his back to the room, his hands clasped behind his back. He hadn't said a single word since they left the basement kitchen.

The heavy double doors opened, and Lena walked in, carrying a small, sealed evidence bag containing the amber bottle and the contaminated lavender jar she had recovered from the pantry.

Nathan glared at her as she entered. "And what is she doing here? This is a family matter, not a bakery convention."

"She saved my life, Nathan," Vincent said quietly, turning around slowly. His voice was dangerously calm. "Which makes her more family than anyone else currently standing in this room."

Nathan forced a cold, dismissive laugh. "You're really going to listen to this outsider over your own cousin? Over the man who stood by you when the police raided our docks in Queens? We share blood, Vincent."

"Blood," Vincent repeated softly, taking a slow step toward the armchair where Marco sat sobbing. "Tell me, Marco. Did my blood tell you to poison my dinner?"

Marco broke down completely, tears streaming down his face. "Mr. Nathan gave me the vial! He said—he said Mr. Vincent was ruining the family with his new legitimate business ventures! He said if we didn't take over the shipping contracts, the whole syndicate would collapse!"

Nathan slammed his scotch glass down onto the marble mantelpiece, the crystal shattering into a dozen pieces. "The boy is lying! He’s a junkie looking for a scapegoat!"

"He’s not lying, Nathan," a calm, professional voice echoed from the doorway.

Dr. Samuel Reed walked into the library, holding a printed medical report clipboard. He looked directly at Vincent, his expression grave.

"I just spoke with the lab at St. Jude’s," Dr. Reed announced clearly. "Aaron Pike’s bloodwork confirmed heavy concentrations of nerium oleander glycosides. More importantly, I had our estate security pull the internal electronic keycard logs for the basement service elevator between five and six p.m. yesterday."

Dr. Reed flipped a page on his clipboard.

"Marco used his card at five-fourteen. But thirty seconds prior to that, Nathan Calder’s personal biometric keycard was used to access the secure dry-goods vault where the chef keeps her proprietary spice blends."

The silence in the library became absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick Persian rug.

Nathan’s face drained of all color. The arrogant, untouchable mask cracked completely, revealing a cornered, desperate animal underneath.

"You set me up," Nathan whispered, his eyes widening in horror as he looked at Vincent. "You and this... this fat nobody set me up!"

Before Nathan could lunge toward the door, two of Vincent’s elite guards moved with lightning speed, tackling him to the floor and pinning his arms behind his back with brutal efficiency.

Vincent walked over slowly, standing directly above his cousin. He looked down at Nathan not with rage, but with a cold, devastating disappointment.

"We grew up in the ashes of our parents' car wreck, Nathan," Vincent said, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried the weight of a death sentence. "I gave you everything. Power, wealth, an empire built on trust. And you traded it all for a handful of shipping routes and a desperate hunger for a crown you never had the discipline to wear."

"Vincent, please!" Nathan screamed as the guards hauled him to his feet. "We're brothers! You can't do this!"

May you like

"Take him to the private facility upstate," Vincent ordered without a trace of emotion. "Lock him away where he can never see the sun again. He is dead to the Calder family."

As Nathan was dragged screaming out of the library, the heavy doors slammed shut, sealing his fate forever.
