Chapter 2 - The Emergency Boardroom

The 40th-floor boardroom was encased in smart-glass, overlooking the sprawling skyline of the city. Usually, these walls were transparent, allowing light to flood the room. Today, the glass was frosted opaque dark gray, sealing the room from the frantic energy pulsing through the rest of the corporate headquarters.

I sat at the head of the long mahogany table—the exact seat my father had occupied until the day he fell ill.

To my right sat Chloe Park, our Vice President of Human Resources, holding a tablet synced directly to our secure internal servers. To my left sat Marcus Vance—no relation to Valerie, but our senior legal counsel, a brilliant, silver-haired attorney who had served my father for over twenty years.

The twelve department heads who sat around the table looked visibly shaken. Some were sweating; others sat with their hands folded tightly, staring at the glossy table surface.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice even and steady. "I apologize for the dramatic nature of this afternoon's events. But when a house is infested with termites, you don't paint the walls. You inspect the foundation."

"Audrey..." began Arthur Hayes, the Chief Financial Officer, a man Dominic had personally hired eighteen months ago. "While we respect your family's history and your position as a major shareholder, Dominic is the appointed CEO. Removing him without a formal board vote—"

"Arthur," I interrupted, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table to him. "Dominic isn't just being removed. He is being investigated for corporate espionage, grand larceny, and breach of fiduciary duty."

Arthur’s hand trembled as he picked up the paper. It was a wire transfer confirmation dated three weeks prior.

"Over the last eight months," Chloe explained, tapping her tablet to project a financial flow chart onto the large wall monitor, "Mr. Vance has executed seven unauthorized transfers totaling fourteen point two million dollars from our R&D contingency fund into a shell corporation registered under the name Vance Global Holdings in the Cayman Islands. The sole director listed on those filing papers is Valerie Vance."

A collective gasp echoed around the room.

"Furthermore," Marcus added, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the table, "we have verified that Mr. Vance was actively preparing to sell our proprietary neural-processing algorithm to Northstar Capital—a competitor firm—in exchange for a controlling equity stake in their holding group. He intended to bankrupt Apex Innovation within twelve months, force a distress sale, and buy back our assets for pennies on the dollar using the very funds he stole from us."

Arthur Hayes looked like he was going to vomit. He slowly pushed the paper back toward me. "I... I had no idea. He told me those transfers were confidential acquisitions approved by a select committee."

"You signed off on them without verifying the committee minutes, Arthur," I said coldly. "Which means you were either criminally negligent or complicit. Chloe will be auditing your department by the end of the day. If your hands are clean, you keep your job. If they aren't, you'll be joining Dominic in court."

Arthur nodded frantically, his face completely drained of color. "Understood, Mrs... I mean, Ms. Crestwood."

At that exact moment, the double doors of the boardroom burst open.

Two private security guards tried to hold him back, but Dominic forced his way into the room. He had removed his jacket, his collar was unbuttoned, and his eyes were wild with desperation. Behind him stood Valerie, crying hysterically, her expensive mascara running down her cheeks.

"Audrey, this is madness!" Dominic shouted, stepping toward the table. "You can't just lock down the building! You can't revoke my access credentials! I am the Chief Executive Officer of this company!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't even stand up.

"Dominic," Marcus said smoothly, standing up and opening his briefcase. "As Senior Legal Counsel for Apex Innovation, I am serving you with an immediate notice of administrative leave pending an internal investigation. Pursuant to Section 4, Clause 8 of your executive employment contract, any officer suspected of gross financial misconduct may have their authority suspended immediately by the majority shareholder."

"She can't do this!" Valerie screamed from the doorway, pointing a finger at me. "She's just a bitter wife who’s jealous because Dominic doesn't love her anymore! He loves me! We've been together for over a year! Everything he did, he did for our future!"

The room went dead silent again. The department heads looked at Valerie with utter disgust. She had just publicly confirmed their illicit affair in front of the entire executive leadership team.

Dominic turned around and glared at Valerie with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. "Valerie, shut your mouth!" he roared.

"Why should I shut up?!" she shrieked back, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "You promised me, Dominic! You said we would take her money, take her company, and leave her with nothing! You said she was weak! You said she was stupid!"

I slowly stood up from the head of the table.

I walked over to Valerie, stopping inches away from her. I looked down at the sapphire ring still glittering on her finger.

"You're right about one thing, Valerie," I said softly, so that only she and Dominic could hear me. "I was stupid. I was stupid enough to trust a man who traded his integrity for a cheap illusion of power. But my father didn't raise me to stay stupid."

I looked over at the head of security standing by the door.

"Escort Ms. Vance out of the building," I ordered. "If she steps foot on Apex property again, have her arrested for criminal trespass. And call the police—I want her personal laptop and desk seized immediately."

"Get your hands off me!" Valerie screamed as two security guards grabbed her arms, dragging her backward down the hallway. Her shrieks faded slowly into the distance as the elevator doors closed on her.

Dominic stood alone in the center of the room, looking at the executives who had once catered to his every whim. Not a single person would meet his gaze.

"Audrey..." Dominic whispered, taking a slow step toward me, his voice cracking with emotion. "Please... I made a mistake. A terrible, stupid mistake. She seduced me... she manipulated me! She convinced me you didn't care about the company anymore! I was lonely, Audrey... you were always busy with your father's estate..."

I looked at him, feeling a strange mix of profound pity and absolute disgust.

"You're blaming the woman you gave my ring to?" I asked, a bitter smile touching my lips. "You really have no honor at all, do you, Dominic?"

"I love you," he pleaded, tears welling in his eyes as he reached out his hands. "We can fix this. We can sweep this under the rug. I'll return the money... every single cent! Just don't destroy our marriage over this! Think about what your father would say!"

"My father told me that a business dies when the wrong people earn your trust," I said, my voice rock-solid. "And my marriage died the moment you put my ring on another woman's finger."

I looked at Marcus. "Serve him the divorce papers, Marcus. And tell the district attorney that we are pressing full criminal charges for corporate fraud."

May you like

Dominic froze as Marcus stepped forward, handing him a thick white envelope that had been prepared hours ago.

"Have a good afternoon, Dominic," I said softly, stepping past him toward the door. "Your access to Apex Innovation has ended."
