Chapter 4 - The Strike at Sterling Dynamics

At 2:00 AM, the lights on the 50th floor of the Sterling Dynamics tower in downtown Chicago were burning bright.

Julian Sterling sat behind his massive obsidian desk, smoking a cigar, staring intently at two large monitors in front of him. Standing beside him was Valerie Vance, wearing a hastily purchased trench coat over her clothes, looking nervous and exhausted.

"Are you sure this drive contains the complete source code?" Julian asked, his voice gravelly and deep, his sharp eyes reflecting the lines of green code scrolling across his screen.

"Dominic swore it did," Valerie said eagerly, leaning over the desk. "He copied it directly from the primary server in the R&D vault right before that bitch exposed us in the cafeteria. Mr. Sterling, once you compile this code, Apex's valuation will drop by eighty percent overnight. You can buy them out for pocket change!"

Julian let out a low, raspy laugh, taking a drag from his cigar. "Charles Crestwood thought he was a genius. He thought his little daughter could keep his empire safe. He was wrong. His daughter is just a foolish socialite who let her husband steal her crown."

Julian slid the silver flash drive into his terminal’s high-speed port and hit Enter.

"Initiating compilation," a synthesized female voice chimed from his speakers.

0%... 12%... 34%... 68%...

Valerie smiled triumphantly, clutching her hands together. "It's working! We did it!"

99%...

Suddenly, the green lines of code on the monitors froze.

The screen turned stark, blood-red.

A large black crest appeared in the center of the display—the silver oak-leaf crest of Apex Innovation.

A synthesized voice, sharp and commanding, echoed through the quiet penthouse office:

"Unauthorized access detected. Master Protocol 'Crestwood Legacy' activated. Executing remote payload purge in 3... 2... 1..."

"What is that?!" Julian shouted, dropping his cigar onto his mahogany desk as the monitors began flashing wildly. "Stop it! Abort execution!"

He slammed his hands onto the keyboard, trying to force a system shutdown, but the keys were completely unresponsive.

Across his dual monitors, millions of lines of proprietary corporate data—Sterling Dynamics' client list, private financial ledgers, illegal lobbying records, and confidential patent applications—began disappearing in real time, replaced by a single repeating line of text:

PROPERTY OF AUDREY CRESTWOOD. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

"Shut it down! Unplug the server!" Julian roared at his chief IT officer, who was standing near the doorway, pale with horror.

"I can't!" the engineer cried out, staring at his tablet. "It’s a cascading logic bomb! It's bouncing through our local intranet into our cloud backup! It’s wiping our main mainframe in Dallas right now!"

"No!" Julian screamed, slamming his fist onto the glass desk so hard it cracked.

At that exact moment, the heavy glass doors of Julian's private office were pushed open.

Four armed federal agents, dressed in dark windbreakers bearing the initials FBI - Cyber Crime Division, marched into the room, followed closely by Marcus Vance and two local police officers.

Leading the group was Special Agent Sarah Miller, holding a federal search warrant.

"Julian Sterling?" Agent Miller announced, her voice booming through the room. "I am Special Agent Miller with the FBI Cyber Crime Task Force. We have a federal warrant for the immediate seizure of all electronic equipment, servers, and storage devices on these premises."

Julian stood up, trembling with rage. "This is an outrage! On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of federal corporate espionage, unauthorized access to a protected defense network, and illegal possession of classified trade secrets," Agent Miller replied smoothly, gesturing to her agents. "Ten minutes ago, your server network initiated an illegal remote compilation attempt on Apex Innovation’s proprietary neural interface—a technology protected under Federal Defense Supply Contracts."

Valerie gasped, shrinking back against the wall, trying to hide behind a decorative plant.

"And Ms. Vance," Agent Miller added, glancing over at her. "Don't bother hiding. We have an arrest warrant for you as well—grand larceny, corporate fraud, and conspiracy."

An officer stepped forward, grabbing Valerie’s arms and forcing them behind her back.

"Get your hands off me!" Valerie shrieked, tears springing to her eyes as the cold steel of handcuffs snapped around her wrists. "Julian, do something! You promised me I’d be safe! You promised me an executive job!"

Julian didn't even look at her. He was staring at Marcus Vance, who was standing near the doorway with a calm, victorious smile on his face.

"Tell Audrey she hasn't won yet," Julian snarled through clenched teeth as an agent grabbed his arm. "My lawyers will have me out on bail by sunrise!"

Marcus adjusted his glasses and stepped closer. "Actually, Mr. Sterling, because the neural processor is classified under National Security Supply protocols, bail is legally non-applicable. You’ll be staying in federal custody until trial. Have a pleasant evening."

As the federal agents dragged Julian and Valerie out of the ruined office, Marcus pulled out his phone and dialed my number.

"Audrey?" Marcus spoke into the receiver. "Phase One is complete. Sterling Dynamics' primary server network has been scrubbed, Julian and Valerie are in federal custody, and the FBI has seized all the physical evidence."

On the other end of the line, sitting in my father's old leather chair on the 40th floor of Apex headquarters, I let out a long, quiet breath.

"And Dominic?" I asked softly.

May you like

"The police are pulling up to his house right now," Marcus replied. "It's over, Audrey."

"No, Marcus," I said, looking down at a photograph of my father sitting on my desk. "It’s just beginning. Now we rebuild."
