Chapter 5 - The Fall of Dominic Vance

The morning rain washed over the city, turning the asphalt streets into slick gray mirrors.

Outside the gates of the gated community in suburban Denver where Dominic and I had lived for three years, six police cruisers and two unmarked sedans sat with their lights flashing silently against the wet autumn leaves.

Neighbors stood on their pristine front porches under umbrellas, whispering and pointing as several officers marched up the brick walkway toward our Mediterranean-style mansion.

Inside, Dominic sat on the velvet sofa in the living room, an empty bottle of hundred-dollar scotch sitting on the glass coffee table beside his phone. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his suit jacket was crumpled on the floor beside him.

The heavy oak front door shuddered under a series of loud, rhythmic knocks.

"Denver Police Department! Open the door!"

Dominic didn't move. He just stared at the empty fireplace, his hand trembling as he took another sip of warm whiskey directly from the bottle.

THWACK.

The front door burst open as officers entered the foyer with tactical precision, their boots loud against the imported Italian marble floor.

"Dominic Vance!" a senior detective called out, stepping into the living room with his badge held high. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit corporate espionage."

Dominic slowly raised his head, looking at the detective with a dull, vacant stare. "Where is she?" he asked, his voice hoarse and barely audible. "Where's Audrey?"

"Mrs. Vance is currently presiding over an emergency shareholder meeting at Apex headquarters," the detective answered coldly, pulling Dominic up from the sofa and turning him around. "Hands behind your back."

As the cold metal handcuffs clicked around his wrists, Dominic looked around the sprawling living room.

The custom oil paintings on the walls, the crystal chandeliers, the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the heated pool—everything in this house had been purchased with money generated by my father's company. He had lived here like a king, convincing himself that he had earned every luxury through his own brilliance.

Now, he was leaving it in handcuffs, wearing a wrinkled suit, led by two police officers past his staring neighbors.

As they led him down the front steps toward the waiting police car, a swarm of news reporters and camera crews erupted from behind the police tape. Flashbulbs exploded like lightning in the rain.

"Dominic! Did you embezzle fourteen million dollars from Apex Innovation?" "Dominic! Is it true your wife went undercover as an assistant to expose your affair?" "Dominic! How do you respond to the federal charges filed by the FBI?"

Dominic pulled his head down, trying to avoid the piercing lenses of the cameras, but there was nowhere to hide.

At that exact moment, across town in the grand auditorium of Apex headquarters, I stood before three hundred shareholders, board members, and news journalists.

I was dressed in a sharp black suit, my father's vintage gold watch resting on my left wrist. Behind me, a massive screen displayed the new financial recovery roadmap for Apex Innovation.

A reporter in the front row stood up, holding a microphone. "Ms. Crestwood, following the arrest of your husband and the exposure of this massive internal fraud, how can investors be sure that Apex Innovation is stable?"

I looked directly into the camera lens, knowing that every business news channel in the country was broadcasting this press conference live.

"Apex Innovation was never vulnerable because of its technology," I answered, my voice steady, resonant, and absolute. "Apex was vulnerable because we allowed a predator to wear the crown. Today, the crown has been returned to its rightful place. We have recovered eighty-five percent of the embezzled funds, secured our core patents, and completely purged the compromised leadership."

I leaned forward slightly, resting my hands on the podium.

"My father built this company on trust, innovation, and unwavering integrity," I continued. "Starting today, I am taking full operational control as Chief Executive Officer and Chairwoman of the Board. To our partners, our employees, and our shareholders, I give you my word: Apex Innovation is not just surviving. We are stronger than we have ever been."

The auditorium erupted into a thunderous ovation. Board members stood up, clapping enthusiastically, while investors nodded in visible relief.

Standing near the side exit, Chloe Park looked at me with tears of pride in her eyes, giving me a quiet, subtle thumbs-up.

I smiled back. The storm had cleared, and the foundation of my father's legacy was finally secure.
