Chapter 3 - THE CRACK IN THE WALL

Late that afternoon, the rain returned to the city, washing against the high windows of the St. Jude's staff lounge.

Sophie Reed sat alone in the corner of the breakroom, her head resting in her hands. Her untouched cup of tea had gone stone cold. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Rachel Morgan doubling over in pain, holding her stomach, begging for someone to listen to her baby's heartbeat.

The door clicked open, and Dr. Maya Bennett walked in, holding two fresh bottles of water.

Maya sat down across from the young nurse, placing one bottle in front of her.

Sophie didn't look up. "Are they going to take my nursing license?" she whispered, her voice cracking.

"That depends on what you do next, Sophie," Maya said gently.

Sophie lifted her face. Her eyes were swollen, her cheeks blotchy from hours of quiet weeping. "I didn't forge it, Dr. Bennett! I swear to God I didn't! When Mr. Hale told Karen to give her the clinic paper, I tried to grab the wheelchair. Mr. Hale grabbed my arm. He told me if I made a scene during my orientation, he would terminate my residency contract immediately and report me to the state board for insubordination."

"And the signature on the AMA form?" Maya asked.

Sophie swallowed hard, a fresh wave of tears spilling over her lashes. "After the paramedics brought Rachel back in unconscious, Mr. Hale and Karen called me into the office. Karen had the electronic tablet open. She used her finger to sign Rachel's name. Then she looked at me and said, 'Sign as Witness Two, Sophie. If you don't, you were the triage nurse who let her walk out without a chart, and the whole death will be placed on your shoulders.'"

"They set you up," Maya said softly, her heart aching for the terrified girl. "They used your fear to make you an accomplice to their crime."

"I was so scared," Sophie sobbed, clutching her hair. "I spent four years in nursing school... my parents took out loans... I didn't know what to do!"

"Listen to me carefully, Sophie," Maya said, leaning across the table and taking Sophie's trembling hands in hers. "Julian Hale and Karen Doyle are predators. They do this because they think nobody will ever stand up to them. But Mark Vance is a brilliant lawyer, and he can protect you. If you go to the District Attorney right now and state the truth, you will be protected under the Whistleblower Act."

Sophie looked into Maya's steady, courageous eyes. "Will... will the baby survive?"

May you like

"Noah is fighting," Maya said softly. "But he needs his mother. And his mother needs justice."

Sophie wiped her face with the back of her sleeve. She took a deep, shuddering breath, her posture straightening for the first time all day. "Where is the lawyer?"
