Chapter 4 - THE AUDIT TRAIL

At 8:00 PM, inside Mark Vance’s downtown law office, the desk was buried under stacks of printed medical records, insurance policies, and legal precedent books.

Mark sat behind his desk, holding a pair of reading glasses, while his senior investigator, Leo, pulled up a high-resolution video file on a large monitor mounted on the wall.

Maya sat in an armchair, drinking black coffee, watching intently.

"We subpoenaed the external parking lot and street surveillance feeds near the ED entrance," Leo explained, tapping a key. "The hospital claimed all internal waiting room cameras were undergoing 'routine maintenance' between 11:00 PM and midnight—conveniently wiping the footage of Karen turning Rachel away."

"Of course they did," Mark muttered. "Hale’s standard playbook."

"But," Leo grinned, zooming in on a frame of video, "they forgot about the city traffic camera mounted on the streetlight right across the avenue from the emergency room bay."

The black-and-white footage flickered to life.

It showed the rain-soaked street at 11:52 PM. The heavy glass doors of the ER opened, and a security guard rolled Rachel Morgan out in a wheelchair. Rachel was visibly bent in half, clutching her stomach. The guard set her bag in her lap, pushed the wheelchair back inside, and closed the doors.

"Look at the timestamp," Maya pointed to the bottom of the screen. "11:53 PM. That is the exact minute Karen uploaded the forged AMA form claiming Rachel 'voluntarily walked out against medical advice while in no distress.'"

"And look at her hand," Mark added, zooming in on Rachel’s right arm resting in her lap. "The black brace is glowing clear under the streetlamp light. She isn't holding a tablet. She isn't holding a pen. She is completely incapacitated."

The door to the office opened, and Leo’s assistant walked in, looking tense. "Boss, we have a major problem."

"What is it?" Mark asked, looking up.

"Julian Hale just filed an emergency motion in County Circuit Court," the assistant reported, handing Mark a sheaf of legal papers. "He’s seeking an immediate gag order against Dr. Maya Bennett, alleging she breached HIPAA privacy laws by sharing Rachel Morgan's medical records with outside counsel without hospital authorization."

Maya gasped. "Breached HIPAA? I am her attending physician! I opened her chart to save her life and her baby's life!"

"It gets worse," the assistant continued. "Hale just placed Dr. Bennett on immediate administrative suspension. Her hospital badge has been deactivated. Security escorted her out of the building fifteen minutes ago while she was in with a patient."

Maya stood up, her face flushed with outrage. "He kicked me out? What about Rachel? What about Noah?"

Mark stood up slowly, a dark, terrifying smile spreading across his face. He picked up his coat. "Hale thinks he's playing chess. He doesn't realize he just walked right into a trap."

"What do you mean?" Maya asked, her voice shaking.

"He just retaliated against a whistleblower physician in the middle of an active federal investigation," Mark said, his eyes blazing with tactical fury. "We aren't just filing a civil suit anymore, Maya. Tomorrow morning, we're taking this straight to the United States Attorney's Office."
