Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the ICU

The red and blue strobe lights from three ambulances painted the white marble columns of our Greenwich estate in blood-like hues. Paramedics moved in a precise, frantic dance, their heavy boots thudding against the hardwood floor as they wheeled two stretchers toward the entrance. On the first lay Julian, his chest bare beneath the defibrillator pads, his face a pale, waxy grey as an oxygen mask fogged over his shallow breaths. On the second lay Eleanor, her pristine pearl necklace askew, her eyes open but glassy, staring blankly at the vaulted ceiling.
I stood near the grand staircase, my fingers numb, holding the small empty foil wrapper in my pocket. The air smelled of ozone, copper, and cheap lavender perfume from Sienna’s robe.
Sienna was crouched on the landing, her face buried in her knees, her shoulders shaking with violent, silent sobs. She looked smaller without her designer dresses and diamond cuffs, stripped down to a silk robe that dragged along the dust of the hallway floor. When the last paramedic rushed out through the heavy mahogany doors, leaving the house in a suffocating silence, I walked slowly up the stairs.
"You told me she knew," I said, my voice barely a whisper, yet it rang out like an accusation in the cavernous hallway.
Sienna flinched, pulling her knees tighter to her chest. She looked up, her mascara smeared into dark streaks down her cheeks. "Eleanor found out three months ago. She caught us in the guest cottage at the Vineyard."
"And she didn't destroy you?" I asked, my blood running cold. Eleanor Vance cared more about the Vance name than oxygen itself. She had banished Julian’s distant cousins for far lesser scandals. "She let you stay under her roof? She let you keep sleeping with her eldest son while Ethan was out earning the money that built her reputation?"
"She didn't have a choice, Clara!" Sienna cried out, her voice cracking. "Do you really think Julian was buying me those bracelets out of love? Do you think I wanted any of this? Julian paid me to stay quiet about the firm. He used the affair as a cover so if anyone noticed payments going to my personal account, it would look like a cheap domestic scandal instead of corporate treason."
I took a step back, the marble step cool beneath my bare feet. "What corporate treason?"
Before Sienna could answer, the front door burst open. Ethan stood in the doorway, wearing his reflective orange construction vest over a mud-stained jacket. His hardhat hung loosely from his left hand, and his face was drawn with the exhaustion of an overnight shift on the river bridges.
"Clara? Sienna?" Ethan’s voice echoed upward. "I saw the emergency lights from the highway. What happened? Where's my mother?"
He climbed the stairs two at a time, his heavy boots heavy against the wood. When he saw Sienna on the floor, weeping, and me standing over her with a pale, motionless face, he stopped dead. He looked at Sienna’s disheveled state, then at the open door of her bedroom, where an overturned nightstand and twisted bedsheets were visible.
"Ethan..." Sienna choked out, reaching toward him.
"Don't touch me," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave, sudden understanding hardening his eyes. He looked from Sienna to me. "Where is Julian?"
"In the ICU at Greenwich Hospital," I said softly. "His heart failed."

Ethan didn't cry. He didn't yell. He simply stood there, his chest rising and falling slowly as the betrayal settled into his bones. "It wasn't a sudden heart attack, was it?" he asked softly, looking directly into my eyes.
I stared back, the weight of the pill wrapper in my pocket suddenly feeling like a ton of lead. I knew right then that if I wanted to survive the fallout of what was coming, I couldn't lie to the only honest man left in this family.
